Is there any way to request IFR while in route

When going VFR Departure will allow you to request IFR for a brief period of time, but will take away the option shortly after

When you’re outside of the airspace of your departure airport, there should be an option.
I only fly VFR in the sim and have ATC option #1 mapped to one of my yoke buttons. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve accidentally ended up requesting IFR by pressing my yoke ATC button.

The option to request IFR does not appear in the ATC menu in most cases for me if I start a flight VFR.

I have to double check, but I believe if you request VFR flight following you have to cancel that before you can request IFR clearance in the SIM, and if you have the AI Co-pilot handling radios they’re prone to requesting flight following again the moment you cancel.

After departure or any time mid flight;

1. Input arrival airport into the GPS as destination
2. Contact whichever option is available in the ATC menu (Clearance, Approach etc…)
3. They will provide the Squawk code and generally say continue your route as planned.
4. The option to request IFR should now appear in the ATC menu

I could be wrong, but there doesn’t appear to be a way to request IFR prior to taxiing or take-off. So once you are clear of your departure airport’s airspace, the option for IFR will appear.
