Is this a new F/A-18 cockpit HUD issue? (Offset view)

I’m posting in the 3rd Party category because I noticed this while flying the Super Warrior F/A-18 mod. I’m not sure if it also happens with the stock F/A-18 as I haven’t checked there yet.

There are many known and documented issues with the HUD on the forums, but I noticed something new (to me at least) for the first time today and wanted to see if others see this, and if so, if anyone has an idea what is causing it.

When flying straight and level, the cockpit HUD display is offset to one side based on the velocity vector of the aircraft. By that, I mean if I’m flying with a strong cross-wind from the left, my HUD is not centered. It will appear shifted to the left because the plane is slightly crabbed into the wind.

You get a similar idea of this effect if you switch to the external chase view. The center of my screen is pointed along the axis of flight path (velocity vector) while the plane itself is slightly angled into the wind. That’s fine, I get why the external view is like that, but why am I seeing the cockpit HUD view offset? That feels like a bug to me. I’m almost positive I’ve never seen this on my earlier flights. The HUD was always centered laterally. Could something have changed with an update to the mod?

I’ll try to get some screenshots if I can duplicate this tomorrow.

Not a bug and yes always been.
There is a cage button on throttle but no key mapping available for it yet.

Sorry, what is the cage button for?

It locks the hud in place.

Ref f16, but gives you the idea.

Cage

Interesting, I had no idea that existed. And you’re saying that the HUD has always been uncaged? Can’t believe I haven’t noticed that until today.

I’ve always relied on the flight path marker to determine my actual path.

Uncaged is default and yup, always been there😃
Added a link to my other post, explains it well.

One additional note is that the cage button has different functions depending on the master mode and target designator control (TDC) priority, e.g. in A/A master mode it generally cages or uncages the seeker head of the selected missile if applicable, etc. (For those readers who are unfamiliar, the master mode is basically selected by the air-to-air and air-to-ground buttons in the upper left (which are inop in game currently IIRC); if neither are selected you’re in NAV master mode. The TDC is the stick on the throttle at your index fingertip and moves the cursor around, and the “castle” switch on the stick between the trim hat and the red A/G weapon release button selects which display the cursor is on.)

Thanks. To experience all of that, I guess I would need to start playing DCS :slightly_smiling_face:
