ISLC&Riva and MSI Afterburner necessary?

Quick question, I use a gaming laptop with a Nvidia card RTX3060…are the above mentions tools really helpful on a laptop or make this apps more sense on a desktop? I tried all of them but didn’t see any really improvement with different settings. Or make it sense only to use at least on of these tools? Thx for your input in advance!

I am not sure how useful Afterburner will be for you on a laptop, but it was a necessity on my desktop PC when I was running a RTX 3080. My 3080 ran excessively hot with high power draws and would CTD in both of my favorite fight sims IL2 GB (which is not as resource intensive as MSFS) and MSFS, with a lot of stuttering too. I used Afterburner to undervolt my card and setup a better fan curve and these problems disappeared. I now have a RTX 4080 that runs much cooler and actually uses less power at a much higher speed so I only use it for the Rivatuner stats overlay in game now to track power, temps, etc., as I prefer that little overlay to the developer mode overlay and can tailor the stats to my needs. You might want to check some other forums to see if it is of benefit for a laptop.

Hello,
We ask that people not ask help or advice questions in General Discussion. I have moved your topic.

I tried ISLC but didn’t notice any difference. I think that issue may be fixed anyway so it’s not needed (excessive memory usage during long flights from my understanding). When I was using a 1060 3GB card, I needed every frame I could get. Afterburner was a necessity then. I’m now on an 6600XT, so better but still not great for the sim. I found afterburner gave me stutters in the sim with my otherwise stable overclock, whereas the same OC in AMD’s Adrenalin software didn’t have the stutters. Since I have to run Adrenalin anyway in case I want to screen capture, I just let it handle the overclock and no longer use Afterburner to keep more CPU processes free.

Thx a lot guys for your feedback!

Keep in mind that MSI Afterburner is only designed to work with Nvidia Graphics Cards, not AMD or CPUs. So for AMD Adrenalin is the preferred app. Also if you choose to undervolt or overclock be prepared to spend some time tweaking the settings as even .05 changes in Mv and 20 mhz changes may make all the difference in the world! I had a very stable undervolt on my RTX 3080 for quite a while or so I thought, then MSFS Update 10 came along and I started getting CTDs again. Tweaked the undervolt just a bit lower and the CTDs disappeared. Any stutter I once had also vanished.

I prefer to only use my gpu’s firmware (Gigabyte Aorus), there’s simply less that can go wrong.
