Joystick: Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and Flap Buttons

Total noob. First time poster. I looked around and didn’t see this elsewhere, so thought I would post in case it might help anybody else. My son actually discovered it by accident, and I was totally thrilled he did.

In the sim’s flight training for landing you are prompted to use a keyboard “F8” for lowering the flaps. This is particularly awkward if you are in VR and can’t actually see the keyboard without a “flashlight on” (and I have not yet activated voice controls). While the sim is generally spot on with instructing what buttons to use on the joystick when using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, this direction to “F8” on the keyboard seemed odd. And, well, it is.

My son mistakenly hit the joystick’s “9” button once when he was feeling for the trim buttons. Guess what? It lowered the flaps! The “10” button raises 'em. Nice!

So if you have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro you can quit groping for the “F8” key on the keyboard. Just use the joystick buttons. Happy landings! (OK, OK, not all of mine have ended happily so far. Just sayin’. But I’m getting better! (And glad this isn’t the ‘real world’. )

Glad to know that… But I think the very first step to learn the buttons on the keyboard is to actually configure them first hand. Open the controls, and look through the default bindings. Which buttons does what, etc. And if you feel that the binding isn’t comfortable to have. The sim allows us to rebind the buttons and commands to any other buttons and functions. Until you have a setup to do all the flight controls properly the way you want it, they should be good to go.

Usually when I get my new hardware like a joystick. I cleared everything in the default binding, and I start assigning the commands myself, that way I always know which buttons does what function and I can assign all the essential functions of flying the aircraft all within reach in my joystick buttons.
