I am new to MSFS VR and there is a jungle of information out there about how to set it up, and I would love your help!
I bought and run the game through Steam and I use a Quest 2 headset, and I have successfully managed to run the game in VR. Now I am trying to optimize the game for best performance and here is where the tricky part starts. I started out by watching some YouTube videos and they left me with more questions than answers. I have tried to answer those questions by reading the forum, but I have not managed to find relevant information so far.
A lot of the advice on how to optimize the performance is based on WMR and OpenXR. From what I understand OpenXR is an addon to WMR? And when following the guide I could not find “Mixed Reality” in the “Windows Settings” (I run Windows 10 Home edition). Trying to install WMR have proven to be much more difficult than I thought it would be.
So my question is, would I benefit from using WMR and OpenXR when I run the sim through Steam and use a Quest 2, or am I wasting my time trying to install WMR?
With the Q2 you won’t need WMR. You do have a choice to either run through oculus native or steamVR.
There’s a welcome guide here:
If looking at guides on YT just make sure the guide is specific to Q2. VRflightsimguy has done some for this I believe.
Also, MSFS runs slightly different to other VR games. It uses openXR, so therefore just because you own it on steam does not mean you need to use steamVR.
Unfortunately, the answer to your question is probably “who knows?”. VR in MSFS 2020 is an absolute mess right now. Unless you’re super lucky and it works out of the box, you’re likely in for a world of pain trying any number of the apparently near-infinite number of hints, tips, tweaks, random chanting that may or may not work on your particular system. I’ve given up on it for now, it was just taking too much time for little to no payback. I wish you well and hopefully the devs will return to this once the XBox stuff is out of the way. But, after a year on the market, I’m not really holding my breath to be honest.
I am a new VR user here entirely, never used it before. Been using the quest 2 for two weeks. Never looked back since my first time using it in MSFS, what a difference. Follow the guides on here as above.
All I use is Debug tool for FOV, bitrate, res encode bandwidth as well as the Quest 2 standard tool for the link where you set your res and hz and no other tools needed. I don’t use steam, so unsure if that complicates matters. It can work, as in my case with just these tools. I would not say VR is broken in FS, just takes some getting used too, but all my flights have been completed successfully once I get it running at the start of each flight. FOV is much better so your flying will be more life-like and easier to see airports etc for approaches. Requires much less imagination as it is 100% more immersive.
Good technology these days to be make flight simulator such an experience. You will enjoy it. Simon:raised_hands:
I watched your movie about the RTX 2060 settings, are you running the game through SteamVR? And can I just ask why you use the Oculus Debub Tool? Does it help with with performance?
