Just upgraded 6800 XT to 3080 TI. Worth it?

I just upgraded my Gigabyte 6800 XT to a Evga 3080 TI Xc3 Ultra. The 3080 ti took some dialing in, but after a few hours I got it working pretty well. But I can say for sure that my 6800 XT ran smoother at a locked 30 FPS. Nvidia’s control panel would not lock the VR fps like AMD’s would. So I had to use Riva Tuner. But even after that, it’s not quite as smooth as the 6800xt. One place the 3080 ti shines is motion reprojection. My 6800XT had almost zero capability with it. But the 3080TI looks beautiful with motion reprojection.
I am happy with my upgrade, but now I’m wondering if the 4gb of vram downgrade is what’s prevent the butter smooth feel at a locked 30fps. I’m wondering if I should return the 3080ti and just go for a 3090. Maybe I’m always asking too much with VR. But when you spend lots of money on a GPU, it’s hard not too.
I’m using a ryzen 7 5800x, 32 gb ddr4, mvme m.2. It’s a great system. Maybe the SAM rebar helped with the 6800XT.
For all those who are doubtful of the 6800-6900xt’s. Don’t be, because they work wonderfully once you get them dialed in.

Just my opinion (as a 3090 owner), but going from a 6800XT to a 3080ti is a bit of a sideways move. Going to a 3090 would be an improvement but I was lucky and got mine for not far off the original list price - it’s far too expensive now.

Personally, if I already had a 6800XT I’d stick with and wait until the next generation (or the one after that) is released.

Well I’d tend to agree with you. But if I were the original poster I’d hang on to the Nvidia card for one reason.

The impending release of Nvidia DLSS.

It’ll be a game changer! Assuming Asobo do a correct implementation… :slightly_smiling_face:

Well according to GPU benchmarks, the 3080ti is 47% faster. Not sure how accurate that is though. It’s funny. I was able to score a 21,329 time spy graphics score with my 6800xt. My 6800xt timespy
The highest I’ve been able to score my 3080ti is just over 20,000 My 3080ti timespy

They are both great cards though. I might see if I can return this 3080ti for a 3090

May I ask where you got it? Would love to get one (just not at scalper prices).

I paid $1999 for the 3080ti on Amazon. Which isn’t too bad. I could have saved a bit going eBay, but I like the return policy of Amazon, it felt safer.

Is it true that Asobo capped the maximum allotted vram usage? When I run fps counter I. Dev mode it only says 6gb of vram being used. But with GPU-Z it says I’m using over 10GB. Just trying to figure out if I’ll benefit from the 3090 over a 3080ti.

Thanks! I looked just now and saw a few at roughly that price; many quite a bit higher. Although my 1080ti performs admirably, I might have to grab one… :slightly_smiling_face:

I found some 3090’s for $2600. It’s crazy that I think that’s a good price. Haha

It might be worth it for people to buy a PC thats already built for the prices they want for just the 3080 TI and 3090.

I used to assemble pc’s from parts, but its crazy now. Have a 12 generation Intel I9. DDR 5 4800 Ram and 3080 TI, for about 1300 more than the 3080 TI card they are selling on Amazon.

I thought the 3080TI was actually benchmarking the same or even a tad higher than the 3090 in some cases.

Perhaps in the how far you can throw it benchmark, but otherwise? No.

And I would seriously think about that return if you only got the card for the sim.

I have an RT6900XT OC for 1600€ as part of an entirely new custom built computer. It’s located somewhere between the 3080Ti and the 3090. After all the issues I read in this forum with intel and nvidia and the actual tests and benchmarks I took my friend‘s strong advice and went for AMD. No mistake, I run the sim at full ultra settings at 70FPS with current addons completely smoothly except the slight ground stutters bug that‘s been known. But 2000$ for an RTX3080Ti coming from a 6800XT is a waste of money. MAYBE DLSS will make a difference but beside that I would put that money into something else. Or at least try to sell the 6800 well.

I realize you have a 3090 and are invested, but even passmarks own website and tests lists the 3080TI higher in average G3D score. Tomshardware have them close with 3090 in front. Userbenchmark have the 3080TI slightly ahead.

They seems very similar on paper to me.

Do you have REBAR enabled, can you? I’ve got a 3080ti with a Ryzen 9 3900x on a x570 chipset mobo, with REBAR on. Not sure if it does anything or not, I never ran any tests on it, but it seems to play nicely with everything. Hope this helps,

I actually returned the 6800xt, and spent the extra 600 for the 3080ti. I’m not considering it a waste of money because now I can use motion reprojection when I want. My 6800xt couldn’t handle motion reprojection.

If it works it‘s certainly a good thought.

Just not sure if 12gb of vram is enough now. But then again, the sim will only use what you have.
