We all want things to work perfectly and complain with things go wrong. I came across a video describing what went into creating Flight Simulator 2020 and it was a real eyeopener. I now have a much better idea why everything is not perfect, but Microsoft continues to refine the product working toward that end.
How Microsoft Flight Simulator Recreated Our Entire Planet
…and made so many mistakes and bad coding decisions ad infinitum, that for many people, as documented in this very forum, it remains kludgy and unflyable.
Let’s balance things out. There are some good things for sure but I would say 70-30 against those. Let’s see what SU8 brings with bug fixes etc.
I agree it was an impressive video, as were all of them, but the reality is a tad different.
They did good on recreating the planet, just wish they could have done half as well in creating the aircraft systems, weather accuracy, stability. I know this is a 3rd party looking for Microsobo brownie points but MS put out several of their own Discovery Series videos. Problem with the videos MS released is that only half of the stuff they advertised worked on release. To this day they still don’t have but 75% of what they advertised working most of the time. I would hardly give them a “kudos”.
The world is cool and all on some level yea but I must say I recently started messing with Xplane and ortho tiles are actually freaking great detail wise, the flight dynamics and depth is systems in some top end planes are really great it feels like there is really something at stake.
No hate but enough of the broken physics and maybe mathematics has been documented by some very smart people here so yea it is pretty cool as an experiment and it will evolve.
Although it really annoys me that the first thing after anyone posts something positive about MSFS is always a kick in the crotch. Do you realise that this guy may have had a really good day and been happy with what he experienced and saw in this video, and some people have nothing better to do than pour cold water over other people’s happiness. It’s very inconsiderate. Especially since there are hundreds of threads out there dealing with MSFS’s inadequacies. So WHY always this negativity? It’s so pointless and it is cruel.
In any case: reality lies in the eye of the beholder.
My reality of MSFS is far different from yours. While I’m not happy with everything I’m still amazed by what has been achieved so far. Also considering other out-of-box experiences with previous flight simulators.
Same thing goes for negative threads. People with differing views pile in and tell those that have criticism to just leave for another simulator, tired of seeing the same negative threads, ect. It goes both ways. The only difference between those negative threads and ones that are positive like this is that the negative one gets closed and banned.
You have no idea what “coding decisions” they or Asobo made…good, bad, or indifferent.
You also project your bias on others. Many, many users aren’t having major issues, and certainly aren’t having issues that make anything “un-flyable.”
Once again, the vocal minority tries to speak for everyone. You don’t speak for me.
I’ve seen that happen to positive threads multiple times as well. As soon as the excrement hits the fan, pandemonium breaks out because too many people cannot stay on topic and soon all spirals out of control. Both in positive as in negative threads the tone of voice is often far from civil
The negative threads that are closed most are those where people - often the topic author - are just blowing off steam without any attempt at being constructive. Those threads are beyond useless, and sometimes seem deliberately worded in order to draw people into a fight. I’m very glad this kind of stuff get’s banned immediately.
Also when I search for words like “broken”, “CTD”, “finished” etc, I find enough threads. So there seems enough room in this forum to discuss problems and point out the game’s deficiencies.
In the end everything has its time and its place. And if someone tries to be positive you don’t shut him down like that. Also if there’s a real problem being discussed it’s no use to tell the people to stop whining, because they most likely DO have a real problem. So BOTH ways are inconsiderate and brutish.
Problem is: the culture in forums like this is lacking. Many feel so entitled that their opinion is the only one that matters that constructive discussion becomes impossible. And some just come here to troll around. Fortunately not the majority
In German we have a saying: “the tone makes the music” => meaning chose you words in a way appropriate to the situation you’re in. It’s just common courtesy.
And we have a seconds saying: “the way you call into the forest, it’ll come back” => basically meaning “you reap what you sow”.
Let me clarify, it is not kludgy for me, nor do I get CTDs, nor stutters. In fact, I find the game and fps smooth and high. I said many others found it kludgy etc, as multiple topics will attest.
My argument has always been with the flight model and atmospheric renditions, both of which leave much to be desired. It has ever been thus since before day 1.
Interesting. That’s not how it came across to me at all either.
To me your comment came across as extremely dismissive of the video and its content. The brevity of your comment with the sheer amount of negative adjectives added to that impression.
The fact that your main gripe is with the flight model wasn’t clear to me at all. What I draw from your comment is:
mistakes
bad coding decisions ad infinitum
kludgy and unflyable (you didn’t exactly exclude yourself from the “many people” - it sounds to me more like “me and many other people”)
70:30 is bad
the video doesn’t show the reality
But maybe read your comment once again and try to put yourself in the perspective of someone who is basically happy with MSFS. Maybe you’ll see it too.
I too have found a few bugs. As the video points out, it would be impossible for the employees at the development companies to fly each square inch of the earth and find every little fault. As least they are listening to the customers and continue to bring out fixes. I have found that most of my airplanes are a pleasure to fly. A couple of the third-party products are a disappointment, but I didn’t do my research before shelling out the dough. Before retirement, I have flew all over the world as a pilot for a major international airline. Now I love being able to sit in my den and revisit many of these places - bugs or no bugs! Looking forward to future World Updates!
All you whingers need to remember that the sim is just over one year old.
There is still a great deal of development to be done.
You really can’t compare to Xplane as it is in version 12 now and has had much longer in development.
We need to give it more time.
If you don’t think MSFS is good enough go back to Xplane
My first inclination was to respond by saying yeah, but x,y,z but realized what is the point?
When this part of the sim clicks it is the best part of MSFS and there isn’t a point in raining on someone else’s parade. When I am in the mood to explore the world and am not trying to immerse myself in the finer details of procedure and flight modeling there is a lot of enjoyment here.
As you said, the shortcomings have been well documented elsewhere.
I’ve been using flight sims since the first one I purchased on tape for my Sinclair ZX81 back in 1981/2. Since then as I moved onto the AppleII+, IBM PC, Amiga500 and mainly Windows based PCs, I’ve enjoyed what Microsoft has brought to flight simulation.
In recent times, I’ve used FSX (highly modded), P3dV4.5 and Xplane11. I’ve used VR in all the above sims and I guess XPlane 11 has been the closest experience to the realism I’ve felt while flying GA planes myself (which was inspired by simulation).
Enter MSFS… The video discussed in this thread clearly shows how the idea of this sim took form and became what we experience today. Looking back at where we have come from in flight simulation, MSFS is staggering in the world it presents to us virtual pilots. Even the default planes which in other sims had little regard are surprisingly well simulated in this simulated reality. I was initially disappointed that VR wasn’t considered from the start but now that it has, even in it’s initial released version, it blows me away.
Sure there are issues and problems that are still being worked through but what has been achieved shouldn’t be eclipsed by issues that will be resolved in time. WELL DONE MICROSOFT, Asobo and PARTNERS.
