Laggy and stuttery game, low frames overall

Hi Everyone, first post here.

I have been having trouble with stutter graphics and low frames for around 2 weeks now.

I run a AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, with a 4080 super, 32gb ram ( skytech prebuilt) with a 4k 144 hrtsz Asus monitor.

on ground, in takeoff, when i look around, the game stutters… its really annoying and unenjoyable, and its only started these past 2 weeks.

in dev mode the fps counter only goes to a max of 40, with sudden spikes down to 15-18. and ideally id want to play in 4k 60 fps since i splurged all the money on this. I just read on here turning of motionblur can help too. with dev mode fps counter, it also says limited by main thread.

I just deleted my cache and not much improved.

i run on TAA with Frame gen on, and have LOD at 150… idk like that to be higher, i see al these screenshots of such high res flights… I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. every other thing I think i set to ultra.

what can i do to improve things? i even turned off AI and nothing changed.

Thank you so much!

also when i try to take screenshots, my monitor over exposes the image. is that the HDR settings on it? how can I find out how to fix these issues. I should be able to run 4k 60fps no problem right?

HDR is to blame for your washed out screenshots for sure. As for the rest, curious to see what others say. Your system is outstanding.

Post a screenshot of the dev tools FPS

heres my overexposed clouds screenshot

im just plateu-ing around 40…

how can i fix the washed out screenshot stuff? is there something in monitor settings? ive never had the problem when i played this on laptop.

im doing a flight rn in the a320fbw, and im lagging all the way during taxi… completely popcorning. I even took down some LOD settings…

edit: now during take off everything is bummpy too. not sure what the problem is. im good on ram… monitor is brand new. this is really frustrating

Can’t speak to your laptop settings or why it worked before, but I know there’s a way to run MSFS in HDR and do post-processing work on your screenshots to make them not appear washed out, and I’ve never bothered to pursue it, finding it easier to instead just turn off HDR in MSFS.

Hi @BorsodGaming,
One way is to install the Xbox game bar. This gives you a number of widgets, including a FPS counter and the ability to take screenshots when HDR is enabled in MSFS without the “washout” effect".

I have had the same problem since I updated SU15. Before the update, I was very smooth. Now, no matter what the situation is, as long as you turn the view, it will be very stuck. You need to keep turning the view. It feels like the game needs buffering, and then it will get better. The graphics card usage cannot be increased, and can only reach about 60% at most. After the update, my performance has dropped by more than 40%, which is very painful.

I lowered the lod from 200 to 100 and the stuttering improved, but it still stutters, just for a shorter period of time.

Does the sky look good on your monitor, and it’s only screenshots that are washed out? Or does the monitor look washed out? If the latter, is it (sorry…) an HDR-capable monitor, and is HDR turned enabled in your Windows graphics settings? You didn’t mention that in your original post.

HDR screenshots are problematic. And unfortunately there’s no ‘Easy Button’ way to capture the .jxr (HDR) files and convert them to .png (SDR.) If you capture .png (or any other SDR format) from an HDR signal the colors will be washed out and overexposed.

I use this method that @Vibstronium kindly provided. It works well, but requires a little work on your part, since the two files must be located in the same folder where your screenshots are captured.

I have gamebar, i will try this now, thank you so much!

edit:

with gamebar :

definately better, but maybe by the sun the clouds are still a little washed out?

with regular screenshot shortcut :

im sorry to hear that. I hope there will be a performance patch soon because its just very frustrating to play this way.

i put my monitor back to SDR and everything becames washed out, its like the game needs hdr to look good.

i just went under display settings and did some HDR calibration. game definately looks better, but i have to take screenshots with gamebar, not the regular shortcut key bind to get un- overexposed pictures.

under HDR display calibration it walks you through some color correcting steps.

Hi @BorsodGaming
I’ve found getting HDR to look “right” under all lighting conditions is a challenge, & not one that I’ve succeeded in so far.
A lot depends on how you configure the various display settings available to your monitor / TV.

In addition, there is no HDR Peak Brightness Control in MSFS. As @Takamura4240 says in this Wishlist item, “….the clouds illuminated by the sun are always overexposed and I can’t see anything clearly…”
