So with the Twin Otter I enjoy flying between St Martin, St Barts and Saba with the Winair livery and I do it almost every day. I think I can do it pretty well and with the strong reverse capability of the Twotter it makes stopping really easy.
My problem is landing at St Barts. I know you should have a steep approach of atleast 6 degrees and then follow the downhill slope until you reach the numbers of the runway. However, every time I do this I get massive downdrafts just before the roundabout and I have to add throttle in order not to crash. Is this realistic and how do you guys avoid to almost crash into the hill?
I haven’t tried landing the Twotter there, but its hard with the TBM. Problem is the lack of drag, its difficult to not have the speed increasing during those kind of steep approaches in MSFS.
Yes, the TBM is not really meant to land there. The Twin Otter can stop very fast due to the twin propeller reverse thrust and it also has a lot of drag.
I think the mistake most people make (even the “professionial” streames on Youtube) is that they approach the runway like it’s a normal landing, which results in a way too shallow descent and therefore it takes much longer to come to a stop.
You actually have to be at 1500 feet when you start your descent and at full landing configuration right away, otherwise you will pick up too much speed, especially with the more slippery aircraft like the TBM.
The TBM is way less slippery in real life with the props windmilling, there still is a lack of windmilling drag, the TBM should be more than capable to land at st Barths without picking up speed on approach. The TBM has a reverse range just like the Twotter so not really an argument.
