Greetings All, I was wondering if it was possible for you to tweak the ground effect in the 747. Here’s why. Typically as you reduce your 5 knot additive crossing the threshold, you will require about 1 degree of pitch change to maintain your current glide path. As you enter ground effect at about half the wing length, the aircraft will have the tendency of the nose lowering, requiring more back pressure on the yoke. At about 30ft gear height above the ground(30ft call out), you initiate your flare with a two to three degree pitch change. As you smoothly reduce power, you will require more back pressure because the throttle reduction adds to the nose down tendency. With this no wind text book procedure, the aircraft should diminish it’s sink rate and fly onto the runway touching 1400 to 1600ft from the threshold. What I have found in the current state of the aircraft is that it will float extensively down the runway if you apply the text book flare. This would mean that the approach speeds are off or that the ground effect is too strong. But, on a 3 degree glide path at REF speed, you should be seeing around 2.5 degrees of pitch, which it currently does. This confirms that the ground effect is a bit high. In essence, I should be able to easily touch down with in 300 to 400ft of my aim point no lower than REF -5.
