Laptop and temps help

Hello everyone. Just wanted to ask about laptop temps.
I am more of a Desktop guy but a friend of mine purchased a laptop and Msfs 2020. He went for the below laptop…

ASUS ROG Strix G Gaming 17.3" (Intel® Core™ i7-9750H/16GB/512GB SSD/NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB) G731GV-H7145T

At dense scenarios with bad weather he is getting 75-90C on the CPU and 75-78C on the GPU. Fps is ok.

Now he is asking if these temps are acceptable or not for a laptop or if they are too high. As i have no recent experience with laptops and even less experience with a laptop and Msfs2020 i would like some help.

What do you guys think? Anyone playing on a laptop here?

Cheers

it won’t hurt the hardware, it will downclock itself to protect against damage, so the real question is; is it comfortable for him? (with it on your lap I would suppose it’s not that great).

You can always install MSI Afterburner, it comes with the Riva tuner tool, which you can use to limit the framerate to let’s say 30FPS. That will keep the whole system cooler, and keep the experience enjoyable (I use this myself, since i’m running a mini ITX case which tends to get a bit toasty as well, and 30 FPS is good enough for me).

Ok thank you very much for your answer. He actually has a cooler so the laptop wont be sitting on his lap. I will also refer the MSI afterburner to him

cheers

I have Lenovo Ideapad 330 17ich and what made a big difference to me was buying a cooling pad which took the temps down a fair bit when playing for a few hours or more.

Those heats are common in a laptop. The cpu can get up to 100 C!

Laptops cool differently than rigs, so rigs can run at higher speeds while maintaining lower temperatures, the catch is, if something goes wrong, a rig’s temps could skyrocket and fry your machine.

Laptops are air cooled, with minimal space for cooling and heat sinks… no liquid cooling, or whatever. They are made to run fairly hot, and the heat dissipates through the fans and the body of the machine itself. If it gets too hot, the CPU will automatically throttle down or shut down entirely to cool itself.

These laptops are made to run in the 80’s - 90’s all day. You will hear the fans, and you will notice the heat as a laptop is too small to hide the heat from your hands, but your machine is working within proper limits.

I don’t suggest over clocking your CPU of graphics card, as modern laptops tend to run on the edge already, and replacing an overcooked part may prove impossible. But if you run it the way it wants to run, you should have no problems at all.

But… you will notice the heat.

What would be the best performing& durable laptop for FS2020?
Alienware m15 R3, 15-Inch 300hz 3ms FHD Display, Intel Core i7-10th Gen, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB GDDR6, 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM

OR

Lenovo 15.6" Legion 7i

  • 2.4 GHz Intel Core i9-10980HK Eight-Core
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM | 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD
  • 15.6" 1920 x 1080 240 Hz IPS Display
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Max-Q

My laptop runs the CPU @75°max & GPU @80° max. Importantly, no throttling. The key for me was I spec’d it with liquid metal thermal paste and aftermarket thermal pads from my vendor. Combined with a 100mv under volt, and a custom fan profile which boost them quite early (I don’t care about fan noise), and it runs flat out no problem.

Unfortunately most laptops aren’t setup this way by default.

Best performing laptop?

That’d be one of the Clevo barebones systems. They pack desktop components. Think overclocked i9 10900K CPU & RTX 2080 Super! But, they can easily run at over $4000, are almost 2in thick, weight 3kg and require 2x280w power adapters.

Kinda cool just by the fact it’s completely bonkers! You’d need a lot of money and absolutely no space to even consider one.
