Latest on HAGS?

What is the latest consensus on Windows 11 HAGS and VR?

Best I have been able to tell, 40xx series turn it ON and 30xx series and below, turn it OFF.

Hey,

I have it Off, on 3070 series win 11

I’ve got the 3080ti and decided to give it a try. So far I actually can’t tell any difference.

It didn’t seem to cause any issues at least.

I had kept it off at all time due to stutters in the past with my 3090, but now I read that with a 4090 you can in some case gain a lot of fps in some games, so I’m going to test this with MSFS and other sims this week in fact.

I’m not seeing any stutters as of yet.

Is it just Windows updates or is a 4090 really required?

I believe HAGS off with Reflex Mode On+Boost is a good combination with DX12.

The only times I’ve ventured into DX12 I’ve gotten back out of faster than I do when I try DLSS.

Is DX12 any better now?

Rock solid for me these last couple of months. I’m using DLSS Performance with it. Not quite as sharp as TAA, but better frames. I add about 60% FidelityFX sharpening to make up for it. Helps with the distance, but cockpits are still a bit fuzzy. It’s a tradeoff. I’m on the 3080Ti as well.

Do you fly glass cockpit airplanes?

I had dropped settings low enough today doing testing that I hit a solid 72 fps with TAA. But everything looked terrible. Smooth but terrible, lol.

Yes, I’ve been there. Either Renderscaling 70 with TAA, or 100 with DLSS and a bit of sharpening. I fly a bit of everything.

I stick with TAA and just don’t look out the side window much when below 500 feet.

Yes, that works as well! The water is better under TAA. BTW, if you are flying 2D you may want to try Renderscaling 120 to ensure you are GPU bound. This is a requirement for Reflex Mode. With my 4k monitor and my 3080Ti, 120 is the sweet spot. I only fly VR now, so I am always GPU bound.
I should add there is this article on performance from Zendesk. I set my min cache to 5120 and max to 10240. I also disabled full screen optimizations even though I run the sim in Windowed mode.

HAGS has been a net negative for me. Running a 5800X3D+4090+G2. I initially started with HAGS on per the general recommendation to have it on for 40x series cards. It is possible that this is related to frame generation and DLSS3. However, I was noticing a lot of “limited by Mainthread”, both the CPU and GPU were under utilized. Frame rates were slightly worse than on my 3080ti. Turning off HAGS increased the fps drastically (between 40-100%) depending on airport. My GPU utilization went way up.

I am not sure if this due to the fact that I have an AMD CPU or some other weird BIOS setting (for example I have resizeable BAR enabled) but I am now seeing much better performance more in line with my expectations after upgrading to a 4090. Just wanted to share my experience, not discounting or making any comment on other people’s observations. YMMV.

Same for me and my 3090. HAGS is on, no issues.

I think it’s impossible to have a complete consensus on this imho. All easy to try and see what works best for you imho.

With my i9 13900k/rtx4090 win11 PC I’ve found it best to disable HAGS and turn Game mode Off. Also tried it with dx11 and dx12 ( still beta) and found that dx11 gave me better results with MSFS. This is with both my Quest Pro, mainly wireless with Air Link, and my wired OG Vive Pro1 headsets.

I have a 4090 and I have yet to find this makes a blind bit of difference to anything. I leave it off. I don’t use DLSS 3 frame generation as I tend to play in VR. VR already has its own Frame generation. Its called Motion smoothing.
