Live Developer Q&A is starting now. Feel free to discuss here

Really? Can’t wait to watch because I’m completely disheartened.

A month of darkness for this level of depth is not what a lot of non-flight sim vets expect. I’ve seen quite a big of games do more than just this. Like quickly acknowledge on Twitter or forums that yes, there’s an issue. They also give insight then and there to ease the masses so we don’t go full civil war on these forums about who has the more valid opinion.

Really love these Q&A sessions! Good format with voting on the questions too! One hour flies away!

I wrote down a few things they mentioned:

  • They were very honest and open about the issues, admitting they had tried to squeeze in too much in within the two week sprints, which resulted in not enough testing being done. They explained that some bugs only appear in specific scenarios which makes it harder. They are working to improve internal processes around this.
  • They will introduce a community testing group, where dedicated users can test the patch in advance to find issues, along with their own testing.
  • DirectX 12 work ongoing, this is done for the new features mostly, such as ray-tracing and less for performance related things.
  • VR: Closed beta target late October, early November. First with focus on WMR devices.
  • WorldUpdate 2 will be for US and they were very excited about the quality of this!
  • SimUpdate, next one is coming in early November
  • They work all the time to improve airports, a dedicated team both in-house and from OrbX are working to fix issues in airports. So they want us to keep reporting issues and those will be dealt with
  • They mentioned the issues regarding LOD, AA and any such issues were not intentional, they are looking into it
  • Improved draw distance up to 30000ft is been looked into
  • Particle system was mentioned, ongoing work, will be available in the SDK for 3rd party devs
  • They will do more improvements for the G1000 systems, this wasn’t planned at first but feedback from both the community and 3rd party devs have made them rethink and they will do more improvements around this
  • An obstacle database will be introduced, which should help adding radio towers and such objects
  • Visibility request also been looked at, aerosol slider improvement and lighting related to this will be worked on
  • ATC improvements ongoing work and some cool features being looked at together with Microsoft China
  • Night light issues still worked on, two different solutions, one rather easy and one that requires more work
  • Press any key to start will be removed “soon”
  • Metric units will come in an update, no time frame for it
  • Shared cockpit and some other features for next year, main focus on solving bugs right now
  • Xbox version been worked at, optimizations, such as memory optimization will benefit PC players too, one such was introduced in last patch
  • They also talked about continues CPU optimizations to use more threads and some issues have already been solved

Hope I captured it accurately (so don’t take all above word by word please), was some more things but those were the ones I got!

Quick note: The top level post was edited to include a time line of the broadcast (with question summaries), as well as a link to the recorded version. Please ignore the spelling and grammar errors, as this was typed up quickly during the session.

Thanks - I was aware.

I’m more than impressed with what’s going on. This will be an exciting road ahead, so dealing with the hiccups along the way aren’t so problematic anymore.

Thanks Asobo!

This is what I’m most frustrated about. I asked that question in the Q&A forum, and it went completely misunderstood.

I want us (the simmers) to have the ability to modify default airports so that we can mass-update taxiway names around the globe. I want us to be able to easily go into the SDK and modify the names that are incorrect without having to restart from scratch. Ideally, the scenery gateway system would be used afterward to create a database of updated, fixed airports by community members, NOT just for custom objects that people create and put into the simulator. The entire point of the scenery gateway system is for airport updates and edits, not for world object updates…

This question was entirely misunderstood by the team :frowning: . My question wasn’t about bugs in airports, it was about global taxiways being randomly generated and incorrect. We, the users, need to be able to edit default airports ourselves using the SDK and then upload them back to the sim for everyone to use.

Great Q&A otherwise, but still disappointed that this pressing issue was misunderstood.

Maybe you can email/message mods or the community manager Jayne to see if they can answer your real question. Seems like they intended to address it.

Worth a shot or you can queue up the question for next month.

Thanks to Jörg Neumann and Sebastian Wloch for their honesty. This gives me a little better feeling about the next steps of MSFS.

@JuiceBox7535 I personally felt (!) that there is not enough direct feedback to all the issues posted here on the forums. However now that I found the Twitch those interview make total sense. Long story short: Please keep promoting those live videos as much as you can, maybe even on the public MSFS homepage. Another way might be going into prominent issue posts and refer to sections of the Twitch recording, in order to provide people some kind of response.

Good idea. Thanks!

Thinking more about this I would like them to “open source”/wiki some of their manual labor instead of keeping it all in house. Allow people to modify default airports and all they have to do is accept the changes to include it with regular patches. Modifying certain aspects of airports like runways, taxiways, fixing height bugs can be easily fixed for most of the world in a month by the community of their sdk allowed us to submit patches.

And your point, dude?

Definitely needed. This is already discussed in the wishlist, see:

Right, but they misunderstood the purpose of the scenery gateway. That’s why this became an issue :frowning:

Ah, OK. Is that part of the Twitch stream? If yes, can you point out the mm:ss for me to watch? Thanks!

Scenery Gateway: 16:06
Taxiway Names: 23:03

Scenery gateway was misunderstood as just being for custom created objects. It should primarily be for airport taxiway name / layout edits.

Taxiway name thing was misunderstood as they are just fixing bugs. This is larger scale and should involve the community (see here: What is your plan to mass-update airport taxiway names, layouts, runway numbers, etc.?)

@sfdeham, thanks for the feedback! I agree, although we announce the Q&A sections in the official announcements section ahead of time, it is easy to forget the day of. So I feel it is good to have some reminders and discussion here on the forum. Will bring your recommendations up to the moderators and community managers. Thanks again for the feedback!
