Live weather doesn't match the real weather in the UI when selecting an airport

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

The live weather shown in the UI when selecting an airport doesn’t match the real weather. The visibility is given in NM while I think it should be given in kms, and the indication should indicate up to 10+ KM.

Provide specific location or coordinates:

Not applicable

Provide time and date of the observed weather issue:

Not applicable.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

Not relevant.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

Every time.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Select free flight
  2. Select an airport.
  3. The airport tag shows the live weather inaccurately.

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

What peripherals are you using, if relevant:

Not relevant.

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

No

[PC Only] What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use?

Not relevant.

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

Not relevant.

• Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• Current weather at Santa Rosa (KSTS) is categorically LIFR. The UI did not show that. When I accept the mission and get in the aircraft, the ATIS reports clear skies with two miles visibility. The actual screen shows unlimited visibility and some scattered clouds. The real-world METAR is:
KSTS 260422Z AUTO 00000KT 7SM BKN002 OVC049 12/12 A3003 RMK AO2 T01170117

Tower says the field is IFR, but I can’t seem to file at this point.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

msfs live weather doesn’t use metar data but rather meteoblue. try comparing to that. also missions don’t use live weather until you unlock it AND specifically select live weather (drag slider to right) without any assistance or other options that change it based on difficulty.

There is a massive post in the activities bug section that has been logged by the team saying exactly the opposite. Mission weather is extremely bugged out. People are getting 60 knot crosswinds in areas that are only supposed to have like 7. It’s a global issue in career missions.

There is something really funky with the weather in 2024. Looks nice though.

Meteoblue integrates METAR, but only those data: wind/temperature/pressure/visibility

Setting live weather, I load a free-flight. The weather is still not live and I have to set it again. Then it’s closer to metar, 10-11kts. OP’s airport.

Since meteo doesn’t use METAR verbatim, I suspect it’s a combination of contrived content from meteo, asobo caching data for the world map and all the wind-related “realism” features that make the wind crazier than it should be. The lowest turbulence setting is closer but still is adding wind to calm areas.

I have unlocked the instrument rating.

Why isn’t the in-sim weather matching what’s being said on the ATIS? Why are neither matching reality?

Too many “easy answers.” Something isn’t adding up.

It’s funny, I’ve been saying for years that if you simulate consequences of flying through poor weather, everybody would be clamoring for tools like we use in real life, but the weather would also have to be pretty accurate. Now we have those tools but they’re not making sense of what we’re seeing. Yet, we also now have consequences.

A lot of a-ha moments happening in the past week - exposing shortcomings of the underlying infrastructure.

I went to use weather injection as a temporary solution and before I did, spawning into EHLE I got a text-to-speech notification that “weather services are not available for this airport” from the sim.

I may just use my old Accuseason for now. It’s funny how all the apps I bought to fix MSFS2020 bugs are suddenly useful again.

Has anybody notice the clouds in 2024 have degraded again ? Similar to SU7 in 2020? Up until Sunday it was beautiful now it’s a mess broken brown cumulus everywhere :frowning: and I know they say METAR does not inject clouds, but have a look at the world map, all those white blotches of clouds very visible in France and Germany are not thunderstorms but airports!!!

n

And this clouds in Bologna are now everywhere, again like it was with SU 7

@GUILLEWICK I think i found out what is happening, when choosing a departure airport the weather preset for clear skies is chosen by default, and after we change it the weather conditions shown for the selected airport are not updated! if you delete the departure and add it again the weather shown seems to be updated. to fix this they only need to recheck the weather conditions when the menu to change it is closed like it is when it first shows up. but honestly im not sure if this is part of a larger bug, when flying in the live weather preset without real time(choosing this will not update the weather conditions too) the efb still gave me 1kn wind for my arrival airport and the suggested a runway in reality had 10kn tailwind

Thanks! It makes complete sense.

In regards to whether or not is a larger bug, I’m having this feeling of living a deja vu :stuck_out_tongue:

We have seen this happening in the early days of MSFS2020.

Have a nice day!

yes, same as you, i noticed today that the live weather is not as beautiful as last week. The quality of clouds is bad now. There is something wrong

You’re welcome! Hopefully they’ll fix this :slightly_smiling_face:

I mean now with the streaming if the whole game they could ramp up the clouds quality a lot, no more blaming the xbox etc!! But unfortunately the cloud as better as they are compared to 2020 (last 3 years) they are not as good as they where in 2020 up until su 6 and earlier :frowning:

It’s been driving me crazy!

Sometimes it all lines up and other times ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Although, I’ve been doing mostly bush trips, and I think the mountains might be having localized affects.

Thank you for the bug report.

We have created an internal ticket to see if our team already has this logged, and if not they will attempt to reproduce the issue and create a new bug report. This item is now marked as feedback-logged. If there is an existing bug report or one is created, we will move this thread to bug-logged

Reproducible:

When I select an airport that doesn’t have a weather station, the categorical condition is reported as LIFR (low IFR - ceilings less than 500’ and/or visibility less than 1 mile).

As such, Mina, NV airport (3Q0) does not have an AWOS or reportable METAR, yet when selecting the mission, it was “reporting” LIFR conditions. The time scale was set to real-time.

It’s not really telling us why it’s LIFR, the visibility seems to be 30NM (another bug - surface and flight visibility should always be reported in statute miles - SM) and the sun icon denotes there are no clouds (maybe?).

Further real-time investigation using aviationweather.gov (which I use for real-world flying) proved that there were no IFR AIRMETs or other adverse conditions in the area for that time or the near future. The enroute weather and forecasts are something that is a big missing part of aeronautical decision-making. I’m trying to help people use real-world resources to make those decisions, but I don’t know what the sim will actually feed us when we click “fly now.”

In this case, I flew the flight and the weather gleaned from the aviationweather site, as usual, was pretty spot-on in the sim. No adverse conditions. It was actually a really lovely flight with a beautiful sunset.

Summary: please investigate why the sim status is reporting LIFR when it is clearly not so.
