there’s is more wrong depiction of the whole weather today, I would post Belfast/Ireland
and Malta, but i don’t have the photos, same skies as below anyway …such a shame. Again cumulus only…and often high altitude cover is missig
here is Reggio Calabria/Italy

Yesterday i did some short GA flights with live weather from and to smaller airfields, but not in the area to big airports with METAR. I started with a few clouds and green landscapes and flied some miles in green with some small clouds… A few minutes later, the weather changed suddenly in one second to a total white landscape with heavy snowfall and full clouds. Then 2 minutes later, suddenly in one second, i get back a green landscape with a few clouds again. And so this extreme weather changes went on and on the whole flight… I thought it was fixed with the latest update? What have Asobo really fixed now? I see now difference after the latest update. So many clouds are unrealistic low and the clouds moving so fast. And so many dark, grey cloud bases.
Note that in automated METAR the sensor only sees part of the sky. So the METAR may say BKN but 2 miles from the airport the skies could be completely different.
METARs are also posted hourly unless a special is issued. A lot can happen in the real world in an hour. Since the game uses METROBLUE algorithms as opposed to actual METAR then you can sort of expect some variance. What was ATIS or ASOS calling? Since automated weather is generally real-time (yes we all know it is actually delayed a little bit) that is what you should be comparing. Again ATIS/ASOS is generally over the airport.
Mentioned this in another post - I think they need to stop trying to make the weather engine fit the METAR and replace with ‘sim METAR’ generated from the weather engine (hopefully with the weather engine then back to its old working state!) and provide ‘sim METAR’ out through the SDK for external applications to use.
Weather changes all the time as you said. Why implement METAR to change clouds when that only will make the clouds static as we can see now in the sim. This METAR thing has caused more problems with the weather than we had before.
As just a BASIC start, maybe they could program the weather cloud type to NOT show cumulus or towering cumulus with temperatures below like 68 degrees F (20C)? There shouldn’t be very much convection if at all. Or if it must be cumulus versus stratus, at least smash them down to only about 500-1,500 feet thick at most in the colder temps because you simply do not have towering cumulus in temps that cool! If there is a STORM coming through and temps are below 20C, it’s typically a winter storm right? So Probably not much cumulus there either, but R/W pilots who fly IFR could help us out there and advise…
Formula = IF TEMP_CELCIUS<= 20 USE STRATUS OR CUMULUS<1,500 THICK
Just did a flight from KHAF to KVNY and compared the flight the entire way to the weather that Foreflight was showing and it was 100% accurate. Of course, there is a massive high over SOCAL right now.
A real mixed bag today for me, did some flying in the US and had some really nice cloud depiction, but in the UK it is generally pretty terrible again much like I saw in the beta…
One thing that can be said for certain about the live weather since SU7, is it’s extremely unreliable and inconsistent as to weather you get a reasonable picture or not.
Come on guyes !!! be realistic, this is a Sim, and as far as I know, it’ll never be depicted the exact same weather as irl, everywhere on the Globe. Be serious 2sec…weather changes by the sec/min EVERYWHERE on the Globe. To relay that info on time and on situ, is sci-fi, when it has to be synchronised in a Sim !!! You want THAT piece of “IRL”, go and get your PPL, or CPL.
Don’t misunderstand me here, I’m not insulting you, I just say " have a bit of common sense ! "
If you really take a look around the many threads about weather you’ll see that none of us are really asking to see the weather same as we see out the window, of course that will never happen. But what we can compare to is the weather we had before Sim Update 7 and when you do so, you can very clearly see the weather depiction has gotten much worse since then in pretty much every aspect from cloud types, coverage and overall accuracy.
So whilst your intention might not actually to insult anyone, it actually is pretty frustrating because you very clearly haven’t read all the reports here and in other threads otherwise you would see just how broken and bugged the weather system is now.
Look the common sense here is to want the realistic weather we had pre su 7.
This here is Northern Ireland…it looks like a volcanic explosion of tropical cumuloninmbus
Displaying the METAR in-game just highlights how completely incorrect the ‘live’ weather actually is.
Last night at my local airfield (less than 0.5m from my house) the actual weather was pretty calm winds and CAVOK. The METAR obviously reflected that.
The weather in the sim? Broken Towering CU as far as the eye could see.
Something is just fundamentally out with the methodology used to depict weather in this sim and despite repeated attempts to fix it, it just doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
