Live weather is still soooo wrong. Any suggestions?

I keep giving the built in weather a try but it’s not going well.. I do get some weather data now, but it seems hours old or exaggerated compared to actual conditions. (I often need to do the clear skies on start and switch to live weather once on the ramp) It’s just surprising, as I’m in a very metropolitan area.

I’ve used Unreal weather a lot, it works pretty well, but sometimes the wind data goes erratic and my plane bounces all over. Not to start a weather war… If you like the built-in weather that’s great move on to another thread. For those that upgraded from Unreal to Rex Weather would you say it was a good investment? Are you happy with the results? Thanks

Could you give a specific example of what’s wildly off for you?

I have Rex Weatherforce 2020. Here is the deal. If there is alot of weather activity than Rex is three times better and acurate than the sim live weather. If it is a calm or not heavy on the weather day than the live weather has better clouds and weather than Rex. I check real weather before I fly and compare game to the real thing. Heavy snow storm in KIAD in Live weather is a few clouds and some sun. Switching to clear weather and Rex while in game produces the heavy snow and no sun. Conculsion I use Rex for bad weather and Live for sunny beautiful flying days.

I’ve got REX Weather Force 2020 and I use it exclusively, when it’s up and running. Problem is, I get a lot of down time where I can’t connect with the REX servers, while at the same time, all my other internet connections are fine, including MSFS 2020. During those times, I’m running MSFS 2020 Live weather.

REX pulls in more data from local weather reporting stations, and spins up more interesting, relevant weather than MSFS 2020 Live weather, which seems to be more of a regional approach, than specific to your location.

So for about $20 USD, you’ll probably like it better than MSFS 2020 Live weather. For the price of a pizza, it’s worth trying out! :+1:

Here’s an example I ran into the other day. I’m checking the weather in both REX and MSFS Live for CYSE Squamish, British Columbia before taking off. In MSFS 2020 there was a raging blind blizzard, in REX it showed about 43 Farenheit and broken clouds. Then I checked on the real weather at CYSE, and it was 35 Farenheit with broken clouds.

Yeah, there were blizzard conditions in the mountains around Squamish, but at the airport, not even a snowflake.

It’s been my experience that MSFS 2020 weather is more of a regional generalization of the weather unless you are at one of the reporting stations it reads. REX appears to pull weather from many more reporting stations, and is typically more accurate, in particular in remote areas.

YMMV! :slightly_smiling_face:

@KodiakJac @ConveyedEarth80 Bingo! The weather seems generalized or cranked up. Real life it’s cloudy, Live weather it’s raining, Light rain outside, Live MSFS weather it’s a crazy thunderstorm. I don’t expect the clouds to exactly match out my window, but it’s either clear skies with MSFS weather or random grey clouds. I look up the weather or live cam at destinations and it’s the same. I really liked ActiveSky and REX with FSX. Guess REX sounds like a good investment. The sad thing MSFS generates the weather graphics great, it’s just a weather data injection issue.

Thanks for the feedback.

Also be advised. In the Wish list charts Asobo states it will not ever share any SDK for outside weather programs. When Asobo updates you have to wait at least a day or so for Rex to update their program to work well with the updated Sim.

Good to know. So odd they choose to shut that out…

The head of Asobo has said they won’t open the weather to third party dev’s.
Bear in mind though, he stated openly that he fully intends to make it into a very good weather system.

He also stated that “Not Planned” that means just that, they haven’t made any plans to, as yet.
It doesn’t mean that anything with that action assigned to it couldn’t happen at some future time.
That does leave the subject open as to what could happen down the road.

$20 USD this must be a very very very NICE pizza! The problem is you can’t eat this weather ^^ Btw I use REX weather like a few others: mostly in bad or changeable weather. Changing the weather during flight is not best implemented here, but it is - instead of the same weather throughout the flight.

I have read that Hi-Fi Simulations who make Active Sky weather program for the other Flight Simulators are working on a version for MS FS 2020. I don’t know how far down the road that this has got in development but the last I heard was that they are locked out by Asobo to get into the SDK weather section or something like that. Active Sky, in my opinion, is the best weather generating program for FS. I have had it from its early days in previous MS Flight Simulators.

Not just Active Sky though, every developer is “locked out”.
Jorg Neumann, the head of Asobo, states he has no intention of opening the weather code to 3rd party developers.
He also states he intends to make it into a very good weather engine.

So, Active Sky said enough is enough, and is basically making their own system.
Like you, I’ve had Active Sky from it’s early days and have no doubt in Active Sky’s ability to deliver a very good weather program once again.
I will be purchasing it, just as soon as it is released!

Well, @FlippinFlow there’s a guy calling himself Duesen, who makes the Unreal Weather program (link posted by @NatureBoy11 ). His program uses actual Metardata from local airports (so, given that the local meteorologist is awake and updating his metars, it should actually work.) it’s pretty accurate too, although some metars forget to mention there’s snow on the ground for instance.
But the Best thing yet, it’s free, so you can actually order that pizza you’ve been craving for the last few posts

Regards,

Steiny

Actually I had HiFI ASE for the weather but used Rex textures for the clouds in ASE. It was so beautiful together.

I ended up buying it… And actually $20 USD is what a pizza costs where I live. But I think I’ll get more use out of the Rex weather then a pizza. I already like the airport preset feature so you can quickly see the weather in your favorite spots. Also like how you can search for weather. Handy if you are looking for certain conditions. Liking the weather injection, very accurate so far but my testing is limited. I still can’t complete a flight in the #$@# longitude without it crashing after an hour thought. But that’s another matter I guess.

Yes, Unreal Weather was an impressive piece of freeware. I really liked it, developer did an excellent job.
