Loading a flight .FLT in VR sends me to a 2D view in the 3D gridspace

Not sure if this should go here, or Tech support, or Bug reports (too many forums!) , but …

Loading a flight (.FLT) does not allow me to play in true 3D VR. It’s the 2D window (like the menu) in that grey 3D gridspace. See screenshot

It happens whether I switch to VR before loading the flight or afterwards. I’ve only ever seen this when trying to load some of those 40th Anniversary activities with a similar bug.

Any ideas? I was midflight on a longer journey and I just want to finish it.

This has happened to me before when I was using SteamVR with the Steam version of MSFS. If so, make sure the following setting for MSFS in your Steam library is unchecked.

Thank you, but I’m not using SteamVR for FS.

Happened to me as well on OpenXR. I just ended up rebooting and loading all flights from 2D mode then after Fly Now I switch to VR.

As stated, this issue happens if I switch to VR after loading the flight, or before.

It’ll be some VR virtual desktop setting you have enabled. Check Steam MSFS settings like I suggested earlier, and any other VR headset specific utility software settings (eg. Occulus) you have running.

Surely that ain’t it, chief. I’m not in some virtual desktop in my VR API. This is within MSFS VR. And why would it be a VR API issue when my flights load in full VR starting a new flight but within the 2d window when loading a flight I saved?

EDIT: fixed “.FLT” in the post as mentioned by @SearBreak225638 .

Sorry, but I tried to duplicate your error but didn’t succeed. I was able to save an .FLT mid flight and then reload it later without issue. I saved a second .FLT later in the flight and reloaded it without problems also. I tried reloading the plans without quitting the sim first and also after quitting the sim and restarting the computer. All tests worked for me so I couldn’t figure out your problem.

Specs

  • GPU AMD 6900xt
  • CPU AMD 5800x
  • Steam version of the sim but running it via WMR’s OpenXR
  • Reverb G2 v1

Good luck.

The OP is talking about a flight scenario setup (time, weather, location, etc…) - .FLT file and you are talking about an .FPL file?

Well that was a mistake. Thanks for pointing that out. I don’t know why I typed .FPL but I should have typed .FLT. Note I corrected it in my post.

friend, try disabling in openxr settings Use latest preview.

…and one more thing, I save the FLT file in PC mode after exiting VR mode (save it on my disk) then load the file in PC mode, click fly and switch back to VR mode - it works for me. (I had a problem when saving the FLT file in VR mode). Informative. Switch between PC/VR modes by pressing CTRL+TAB.

What problem specifically did you have? Because I’m only interested if it is the specific problem I had.

I have 100% the same issue and I actually wanted to post about this problem too.
I didn’t find any way to fix this - also I am certain I tried saving flight after leaving VR mode and the same problem persisted.

(sorry for the double comment, I am new to the forum)

Did anyone ever find a fix for this? I’m having the exact same problem. Tried various work arounds, no matter what I do it will only display saved flights in theater mode. Doesn’t matter how or where they’re saved. Starting new flights works just fine.

Only thing possible is to load the .FLT click fly now then go in to VR.

What happens if you go in to WMR, three dots/settings/environment and clear environment data?

^^This guy reported me for being the second person in this thread to say his post was unhelpful. Good luck getting help on this forum folks.

It’s unfortunate that through over-moderation we lost the essential commentary that the above posts from @TalonCGMAL miss the mark and are not helpful.

Honestly I don’t think there is a fix until Asobo fixes it. It appears to be a built-in bug. And definitely NOT a VR platform issue, not WMR, etc. Strictly MSFS issue.
