LOD 200 vs higher levels?

With latest SU7, what all does increasing LOD beyond 200 get you? Such as setting at 300, 350, or 400? What specifically does this impact? If you have it set at 300, does increasing to 400 impact anything close by, or does it just increase the draw distance and really only have an impact when at higher altitudes?

If you have someone that can help, you can try this (my brother-in-law did it). He had his wife change the two LOD sliders randomly, then he tested without knowing the settings. When she set them in the lower 1/4 of the range he could tell the difference for sure, but he said when she set them between 250 and 400 for T-LOD and between 150 and 200 for O-LOD then he couldn’t distinguish much between the two.

Clearly everyone’s experience will be different, but that’s what’s great about having the sliders.

When I tried last (before SU7) I couldn’t tell the difference between object LOD 10 and 200. Not sure why it didn’t do anything. I compared screenshots by switching back and forth, and there weren’t even minimal changes.

Does anyone know where it applies? I’m not sure if I tested photogrammetry or not.

With both LOD’s I run the 1st at 400 and the second at 300, sim runs fine smooth, looks really good.

It’ll run at 300 / 200 but I think it just looks terrible. The LOD # is distance and the second is up close from what I gather


This is on a 1080 ti everything set to ultra, the machine is i7-6 with 16 gigs and a 55" UHD tv… average 20 - 24 fps…

I figured that too, but at least in SU5 it wasn’t the case. I should do more testing in the current version.

Even switching between the images full-screen the only changes I see are the slight changes in camera rotation, the plane’s position and cars moving.
Perhaps it didn’t matter for photogrammetry but for other objects?

I do agree that the best way to probably tell is to pause the sim and take screenshots at LOD 100, 200, 300 and 400. I may try tgis later but suspect that I won’t see any differences for levels over 200 (at least that is what my eyes seem to be telling me).

As my monitor is only 1920x1200, that could be the reason, but perhaps those using 1440 or 4k might see a difference.

400 does make my CPU a tad toasty though.

What we need is a dynamic LOD system. There’s no reason to have LOD 400 on the ground at a complex airport. It will bring any system to its knees. But 400 is certainly nice when you’re flying over mountain ranges at 35k feet (you can actually see nice details). It should basically start you at the lowest terrain LOD on the ground at an airport and dynamically rise up as you gain altitude. That way you’ll keep great fps on the ground and at altitude. Of course, you could pause and manually change it during every phase of flight, but that is rather annoying.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Maybe the sim could use 1/2 of the value you have it set at while you are on the ground and then increase it as you gain altitude.

What specifically does 400 offer over 300 for Terrain LOD? Going over 300 LOD starts impacting performance.

400 gives you more detail farther away, at 100 you start to see bare areas just outside of your FOV, as you increase the LOD that bare area disappears and displays detail, while you cant really make out the detail you can see it none the less. ie 100 LOD ahead look like there might be a desert ahead, while 400 you can see trees, bldgs etc.

Pre 5 you could run you LOD and 9 and 9, and while just a tad laggy, OMG what a beautiful game LOL ;p
