I have a few digital radio clocks in my house that must be 30+ years old and they still have perfect displays, no missing elements and they’ve been running 24/7 all those years.
I’d be very surprised if what you are describing is not a hardware problem. A few months ago I decided to swap out the rotary encoders (for frequency) on my Logitech/ Saitek radio panel because trying to set numbers was so “iffy”, and the rotation sometimes jammed up. I decided to use Alps dual axis encoders instead. When I took the back off the radio panel, I was horrified by the appalling standard of workmanship inside. The soldering of wires in many places looked as though it had been done by a 5 year old child brandishing a hot poker. The insulation on many wires was burned, and there were many frayed exposed wire ends . The mechanisms used to hold the silver knobs on are ridiculously complex, comprising more than 20 separate parts (excluding the screws needed to hold those parts together). There are a couple of gears (both of which easily break as had happened in mine) and idlers. To describe the build standard as a “mess” would be polite.
I refurbished and rerouted the existing wiring and inserted my dual axis encoders, and I have to say my radio panel now works flawlessly. The whole upgrade took me about 3 hours.
Based on what I saw inside, it’s not far off a miracle that any of these panels worked out of the factory if mine was representative. Yours might equally be sub-par.
It sure sounds like a hardware issue to me. I just bought my radio panel and it had the same issue from new. One segment of a number was not working. Logitech sent me a new panel that works fine.
I don’t have all the links, you can probably find them by searching for the Saitek panels, but about 2 years ago there where some good discussions concerning getting Saitek panels to work correctly, even of the Logitech people who was working on getting the panels up and running was participating.
I haven’t flown with my Saitek yoke in quite some time, but when I did I did have the panels working correctly. If I recall one of the issues was concerning your exact problem, and it can be fixed, I believe it was just a matter of having the right plugins and configuration.
I think one thing that hasn’t been addressed here is the power. Are you running the panels off a powered USB hub? That’s pretty important, and also I’m not sure if it was ever fixed, but there is a windows issue with USB power and it cutting off the power at some point or somethign like that, again, maybe that was fixed, but there is also a way to set the USB ports to not power down.
This is generic stuff I’m saying, I just don’t remember all the exact issues, but it’s ballpark things you should be thinking about and checking to ensure your panels and USB stuff is set up correctly.
My issue with the logitech panel (radio panel) is that the Sqawk code dissapears at times …very random as other times it remains ok …bit of a pain when setting the sqawk sometimes!
Yet when set to other modes (NAV etc)…the display is fine!
