Longer, Softer Smoke Trails

With the release of the new Red Bull Carbon Cub, as well as the previously released trailer for MSFS 2024, it’s clear that a smoke system is now being implemented into the sim. However, something I’ve immediately noticed is that the smoke does not linger in the air very long - in fact - it almost immediately disappears. This means you can’t make smoke loops, you can’t fly through your own smoke, you can’t turn your plane around to see the smoke because it disappears way too fast. I tend to do a lot of aerobatics and barnstorming in MSFS, so I’d love to see the smoke system get some much needed improvements to make it more realistic and make it a much better experience for users of MSFS/MSFS24.

Example 2 - the MSFS24 trailer

As you can see above, the smoke trails don’t last very long. They don’t linger in the air, and don’t dissipate, they just quickly fade to nonexistence. This unfortunately takes away from the “fun factor” of smoke. They also have very sharp edges. Not quite as soft as smoke should look.

In real life, smoke tends to linger a lot longer as it slowly spreads and dissipates. You can make full loops and various shapes with them. Here are some real-world examples for reference:

A GREAT example within the sim is DC Designs’ smoke system. As you can see the smoke is soft and lingers in the air. It slowly spreads, thins, and dissipates. You can easily create full loops, and wind seems to affect how long the smoke lingers. This shows that a more realistic smoke can be implemented, and this is almost exactly what I’d love to see out of a native smoke affect. It’s just plane fun!

While this topic may not matter to some, I cannot stress enough how much fun a smoke system can be if implemented properly. There’s nothing more fun than doing a nice big barnstormer loop and flying back through your own smoke. It’s an amazing experience, and I hope with some changes to the native smoke system going forward, that can be something everyone can experience and enjoy.

I 100% agree with you also with the red bull carbon cub the smoke just truns off automatically and you can’t trun it back on and it would be awesome to do thunderbird and blue angel flights

That happens because you run out of smoke oil, so you have to use it sparingly. There would theoretically only be a limited amount onboard. Airshow pilots typically have more than enough for a full 10-minute routine, but I suppose they probably didn’t equip this Carbon Cub with nearly as much since it’s not used for a full aerobatic routines. Ideally, the smoke will last longer when it gets implemented on other aerobatic aircraft.

It would be cool if you could add smoke oil in the weight menu similarly to fuel. Maybe you can for all I know, I haven’t checked. But if not, that would be a handy feature in the future.
