Longitude + VNAV

So I have almost always used FLC/VS and ALT when I needed to change Flight Level, but I want to try using VNAV. I set up the altitude-per-waypoint and set it to Climb or Descend, but the plan does not seem to auto ascend/descend at the designated locations. That is at least how VNAV description made it sound. What am I doing wrong or am I misunderstanding how it works?

32 Views and no one has an answer? Well ■■■■…that is unfortunate.

@Starbreeze2817 Hi,
For utilizing VNAV properly during climbs, you can check out this useful post: Citation Longitude Climb Modes
Regarding descents:

  • Make sure an appropriate STAR and/or Approach (whether ILS or RNAV) are loaded in your flight plan
  • Set altitude on your MCP to the lowest value before initiating the final approach (you can set it to the initial altitude of your Glidepath/Glideslope)
  • Press the VNAV button on your MCP (an appropriate indication will appear on your PFD)
  • Then click the VNAV button in the G5000 control units
  • Your aircraft should begin descent upon reaching the calculated TOD

In any case, for climbs I myself use FLC most of the time, just follow the recommended magenta speeds calculated by the FMS.
During descents - if you are using ATC (whether AI ATC/SayIntentions/BeyondATC or VATSIM/IVAO) - you should always follow the guidance of the air traffic controllers regarding descent clearance and altitudes and you can use VNAV to assist you in order to descent properly to your final approach.

I use High Speed Climb but it does not seem to work. Like I’ll reach TOC waypoint and the plane just keeps chugging ahead at the same altitude and the same speed (as dictated by AT).

So what is the point of a VNAV function if you need to follow ATC instructions in the end? Is it like more designed for VFR? I know it’s been a long time since I posted the original question, but this just came to mind now in March 2025. lol

I for one was waiting to see a reply that answered your question…
