Looking out of the cockpit in GA planes

I have 40 hours dual instruction in a Cessna 172. I have never had a problem looking out of the window when landing or taking off in any plane I have flown in or flown. It seems like when I am in the cockpit of most of the GA planes including the TBM 930 I am not able to see forward as well as if I was in a “real” plane. I get the impression I am 10 years old and can’t quite see over the instrument panel. Am I doing something wrong or ??? is there some setting I am missing???. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Long nose from the PT-6, low wing that’s adjacent, low cockpit for streamlining. No, you’re not missing anything.

172’s legacy is a trainer and pilot visibility is a trait. TBM is a high speed luxury transport. Two very different missions that shows in their design.

You could try setting the Upper Position switch on, in the Camera settings here:

And you can move up and down freely in the seat (I am not sure of KB command as I’m using joypad but I can move up as much as I want).

Also most planes have a landing view set which you can switch to with a hotkey, if not you can always set up your own camera views and save them, then recall them using binds.

Despite what others have commented, I agree with you.

I have 0.0 hours of real world piloting, but I’d like to think that pilots can easily see where they are going. This is not the case in MSFS.

Yes, you can use the up cursor keys to raise the eye position, but not far enough in my experience. Why is there a limit? Why not be able to move up as far as the cockpit ceiling?

Yes, you can move the eye position forward with Alt and cursor up, but then you can’t see the instruments any more.

I don’t know what the fix for this is, but I suspect that it is tied up in the mess that is multi-monitor views and support for wide-screen monitors.

I think the whole method of presenting views needs a structural overhaul.

Another possible is if set homecockpit in general option camera settings.
You will be able to pan view with xbox controller

It’s trying to put a 3-dimensional world on a flat screen monitor. I agree with the OP observation… I used to be a small single-engine pilot and the real world does have better spatial orientation and visibility than a monitor (even using Track-IR). I’d be interested in what the VR pilots say about their experience.

VR will eliminate all of your visibility concerns. Once you’ve adjusted your seat position it’s basically true to life visibility.

On my setup, it is trying to put a 3d world onto three flat(ish) monitors, two of them set at 90 degrees to the front one.

More or less identical to the windows of an aircraft.

It should be reasonably possible to make it look fairly realistic.

Home Cockpit makes almost no difference on my setup. I’m not sure what it is supposed to do.

In VR it’s exactly the same as being in the real airplane insofar as dimensions and spatial awareness is concerned.

Thanks for all the helpful comments and suggestions…I will try what people here have suggested and hope it works…
