Yeah, it’s amazing how much work people are putting into creating scenery for this sim. The community has already made way past 500 scenery add-ons and i don’t even know how many liveries.
Yes, undoubtedly some great work here and some impressive projects.
The only slight downside for me was a perceived performance loss when I had about 20 gb of freeware in the Community Folder. Possibly placebo or my imagination but some feedback from Asobo or others in terms of confirmation or denial of any performance loss would be great for me.
A lot of those sceneries you have to be careful with because they are ripped from google earth, which as nice as it looks the mesh is for one reason or another terribly unoptimized for performance in this engine. Ive had to uninstall a few because it just makes a huge difference in performance compared to hand modeled stuff.
You really shouldn’t have 20 gb of freeware in the community folder. Besides the loss of performance, it’ll increase your initial load time massively. (My sim took 20 minutes to start before I did what I describe below).
What I do and what I advise you to do is to make a separate folder for addons with subfolders for each country, then inside that subfolders put all the addons for that country with a “COUNTRYNAME_” at the beginning of the folder name (you can rename an addon folder however you like and it’ll still work).
Then, before you fly, you can copy all the addons from the countries you’re gonna fly over in your community folder. When you’re done, you remove then again, thus keeping the community folder nice and clean.
Mind you, this won’t solve ALL the performance issues. Some addons simply aren’t well optimized because people are still learning. For instance, there’s a ton of addons for the Netherlands that are resource hogs despite being relatively small in terms of footprint. Nothing you can do about that besides hoping that their creators optimize and update them.
I used to have about 20 gb in the CF but since experiencing a perceived performance loss and long loading times I backed up the folder and then cleared it out so that now there is nothing in it.
Load up times and performance now with a clear CF is really good.
In Xplane I used to have an addon called Xorganizer which enabled me to activate or deactivate addons with a simple tick. Something like this in FS2020 would be great. A developer for FS2020 is already looking at something similar so the future looks promising.
In the meantime I will think about what you suggest. Thanks.
Personally, I wish “they” would create a SPECIAL MSFS Forum folder for ALL of the Addons, Freeware, Payware and all the other commercial ads we have to endure trying to use the base MSFS forums. A SPECIAL folder out of these Working folders would be a blessing..
My add-on’s I just concentrate on enhancing what is already there and just fix things. Like my riverthames fix, should have zero impact on performance as just fixing terrain issue’s and only add things that look right from the default items in sdk.
Am currently working on one for japan as I noticed many issue’s that I could fix to polish up the experience.
All my add-on’s are posted on the flighsim.to website.
I’ll admit it’s partly cos i don’t know how to create buildings and items myself.
I also don’t agree with using google maps to create scenery as it shouldn’t be shared with other users due to copyright.
You are correct, a SUB-Folder of the MSFS Forum Community folder would be a great place to put all of the Addons, freeware, payware, commercial ads etc. I suggest that it be placed In a SPECIAL FOLDER UNDER the Forum Community Folder, Not In It !
A nice tidy place just for all that stuff. That would give it a personal home and keep all the ADS out of the MSFS general Discussions folders.
This comment has been edited to be more precise on the folder location..
All that scenery is cool and looks great for the most part, but it can really slow down load times and performance. I would strongly recommend only adding in the stuff you’re actually going to use. I fly in and out of Toronto a lot, so I naturally have that scenery pack. It’s really the only one I have permanently in my community folder.
everyone’s in such a hurry to get stuff out, that few people are optimizing or fixing anything… looking at you - one-sided liveries that should not be in the Megapack… also, hue shifting a default paint job is not a “new” livery - but still… glad people are enthusiastic…
I’ve tried a couple of Google earth rips. They’re too demanding or not optimised well.
I stick to things created with the sdk which are only ever a few kb and shouldn’t affect performance other than the occasional pop in if there are tons of items.
Either way just a few weeks in and it’s very impressive. Creators are going to improve rapidly.
