I was getting 60+ FPS in MSFS 2020 on high-ultra settings with DLSS Quality in VR and render resolution of my Varjo XR-4 set to 4100x4851 in OpenXR Toolkit. I was on Windows 11 23H2 with a 1+ yr old BIOS and chipset from MSI. I read that the new BIOS for AMD chips and an upgrade to Windows11 24H2 could boost my PC 15-30%. I decided to do this before installing MSFS 2024. My PC is definitely snappier now with 24H2. I also just installed the latest Nvidia 566.14 driver and Nvidia App to replace Nvidia control panel. Now I barely get over 30 FPS even with low graphics settings and resolution. Game mode and game bar are both off. This makes no sense. Thankfully MSFS 2024 doesn’t stutter like 2020 did and I’m able to use motion reprojection (smoothing). But still…

I am not using any addons. Only default planes and a default airport KTPL to test. Attached are screenshots of my results in developer mode. See filenames for my settings in each case. Originally I was getting 130 FPS on monitor 1080p view and around 60-65 FPS in VR in MSFS 2020 with similar settings and this was before all updates described earlier. So not sure what’s happening. My CPU is around 78% with VR activated and memory usage 60% in device manager. However the sim runs smoother. So if this is unavoidable in order to have a smoother running sim, that’s desirable. However it seems that others are getting alot higher FPS and I’d like to know what they are doing as it would help the VR experience. It would also affect a decision to upgrade hardware.
Our rigs are similar, but I’m 6800xt. Non vr.
Double check the data streaming limits in options to be sure it’s not set to low.
If your wifi, try wired also.
Thanks for the tip. I have data bandwidth set to unlimited and I’m on a wired connection. My internet speed is only 35 Mbps. So I’m not as fast as some. But once the scenery loads, the data draw is barely anything at all. I do get slight stutters when new scenery starts to get streamed while I’m flying, but that is to be expected. I’m not concerned about that as it can be fixed with a higher internet speed.
Eerily similar…
30 wired cable here…fastest i can get on my small island😫
I haven’t paid attention to fps but seems smooth for the few minutes in game I’ve had time for. Any better if you turn down or off some of the data streaming?
I have the exact same spec as you, but with 64gb, and 1gb connection.
Your fps figures are right on the money, and near exactly what ive experienced with 2024.
Its killed it for VR. As we know, we need a minimum of 45fps to enjoy simming (taking out asw/re-projection etc). And where i was getting 60fps in DLSS/Quality in 2020, in 2024 i dropped to 40-43fps. That abyssal performance, and not sustainable going forward. No server fix asobo end will sort that.
For that reason I bailed and got a refund. Now i will encourage anyone i can to do the same. Its not fit for purpose, and i dont want people in the community being ripped off. Refund now, and buy again in 6 months time, or whenever Asobo decide to fix this. Because with all our money making interest in their account, they aint got as much incentive to rectify this mess in a timely fashion.
I tried playing offline, disabling photogrammetry and AI traffic. Makes no difference to my FPS. But I’m not surprised at I don’t think it’s internet related in my case.
Glad I’m not an outlier on my performance figures then. Honestly I was expecting even better performance than in 2020 with all the updates I did along with Martial’s comments in the livestreams that VR in MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 would have similar performance. The content by testers in Arizona also seemed promising. I was really looking forward to this given that I have a motion platform too. I was also expecting new features in VR such as quad views, especially after they made the Pimax Crystal the official headset of the new sim. They claimed VR is now a platform. With 800 people working on the product, I thought surely they would have a handful of developers working on this. The VR Pilot asked Seb directly about VR but none of the rumored features were released. Actually it seems we have less than in 2020. It would be nice for the developers to comment on this. If they can’t do it, could someone from the community be hired to work on this like mbuccia? If he’s not interested, is there someone else out there? I’ve been reading about programming in OpenXR and read through part of the Varjo SDK, but I’m not an official developer and not ready to try to implement something. Plus I don’t see anything in the SDK documentation for 2024 that I could find online about the new VR platform at all.
I hear you mate, and you raise some important points there.
I am in the same boat, i upgraded my ram to 64gb, bought a DOF reality p3, all new yoke and pedals etc etc. Was going to get it all anyway for 2020 and xplane, but still, i feel utterly let down by asobo. In fact, im insulted. They have basically lied to the community, or at least not been entirely forthcoming. Its sad.
I spoke to a guy earlier like me, who is wheelchair bound, and relies on msfs for indoor stimulation, its a little sad maybe, but thats his life. And he feels absolutely gutted, so im angry about that too. He had massive hopes for this sim.
back to 2020 for me and others. There is no way they will claw back that lost fps, maybe in 6 months or a year, but im not prepared to wait. Refunded.
I can’t imagine how frustrated you and your friend must be! I think it stems from how excited we were about what was coming. I know I was. Some like to use motion smoothing. But my experience with smart smoothing/motion reprojection has never been good. There were always artifacts…wobbly propeller blades, leading edges of wings wanting to outrun the airplane, and other scenery glitches. MSFS 2020 stuttered so badly I could never get a good experience no matter what I tried. So for the last few years I’ve been trying everything I can to get more FPS but it hasn’t always been a good experience either. At least while 2024 FPS is low, it is smooth running. It has that going for it. Maybe motion smoothing could work. So in desperation I decided to give it another try tonight. After several hours fiddling with settings to get a consistent 30 FPS, I was actually able to have a good experience. It was amazing, in fact. But I don’t know how this helps anyone else who doesn’t use Varjo. MSFS 2024 runs so close to the edge I think people are going to have problems using something else. We need more headroom for this to work. I was really hoping for a native 90 FPS by now between DLSS, quad views, and hardware updates in the coming year. But this latest hurdle has set us back another several years. But after what I saw in 2024 tonight, I honestly can’t go back to 2020. There are just too many immersion breaking things for me to go back to 2020. Hopefully Asobo finds a way to get our FPS back without losing the smoothness and you can try again.
I’ve been really impressed with how well the DLSS Frame Generation works in 2024. In FS2020 it created a flicker on some textures and cockpit displays but now it seems flawless. Maybe it’s an improvement to DLSS and not the game but wow. Of course this only works on a monitor and with Nvidia but it’s extremely nice. So if possible give it a try.
I discovered that VR is rendering pixels that aren’t even seen in the VR headset, potentially contributing to the performance loss in 2024; at least for the Pimax Crystal. Check it out here
This is typical for VR applications. There are articles explaining this. The image is predistorted to counter barrel distortion caused by the lenses. Is that what you’re referring to or something else?
I have an i9-10900k, 3080, 32 GB of RAM, gigabit connection. I get 60 fps when everything is turned to low. As soon as I turn up object/terrain level of detail from 50 my fps turns to utter ■■■■.
Unplayable! I can either play the game in VR with it looking like a grainy, blurry mess or not play at all. While in 2020 I could go up to ultra clarity with OpenXR etc, just like you.
Idk what they did to get performance to be this ■■■■■■, but you are not alone. VR performance is awful for most.
Same specs as you, but with 64GB of DDR5 6000mhz ram and 10gbps fibre wired connection and windows 11 24H2.
Ultra Preset, TAA, TLOD200/OLOD200. 4K. FPS locked to 90/120 using rivatuner.
Getting awful fps as well. On the otherhand, I average 100 in fs2020 with TAA FG and TLOD/OLOD 200 running at 4K everything maxed on ultra. Locked fps at 120 using rivatuner. All these with Activesky, REX Atmos, Vatsim, PMDG/Ifly and tiktok streaming together. Never had an issue with performance, fps is stable and gpu/cpu temps are nice and low.
I am getting roughly 98% GPU utilisation with an avg temp of 81-83degrees on FS2024. CPU around 40% utilisation at 62degrees. All these even when I am at the menu and not flying. Fans are spinning madly and is so noisy. I can feel my PC heating up my room.
No addons, vanilla standard gamepass edition fs2024.
In career mode it does okay though, quite smooth, not as smooth as fs2020, in free flight it’s even worst. My fps tanks to 30 and I get stutters every now and then.
Well I made some progress…I got my monitor FPS back to normal. It’s even better than MSFS 2020 in the same area. (See attached screenshot). Target framerate was set to default 30 without my realizing it. As for VR I haven’t really been able to increase it much. The dev window says I’m main thread limited indicating the CPU. This seems confirmed by watching the video below. More cores and threads provide the headroom we need to enjoy VR on high settings with motion smoothing. But there is a limit…people with threadrippers right now are complaining about MSFS 2024 crashing with too many cores being used. Maybe that’s a bug. I really do like the smoothness of 2024. It’s the best I’ve ever had. Hopefully the devs can provide some guidance on this in the next livestream.
Asobo should tell us which cpu is the best for msfs 2024. Is 9800 x3d? I’m waiting to know how to upgrade my computer. 4090 nvidia. I’m really dissapointed knowing about poor vr performance.
