I have been using sinbrief for flight planning and use the fpl from there on Fenix all the time. However, every time I arrive at Zurich to land on RWY14, I am inveitibly and high and have to do a go around to land. As I approach from EDDM I take a sharp left and by the time the turn is complete, I am already very high. Can anyone tell me the right way to do arrival on RWY14?
https://www.eurofpl.eu/finder#lowpanel finds you CFMU/Eurocontrol valid routes within Europe.
Just fill out ADEP, ADES, EOBT, ACFT (you need to set up just one airframe under “aircraft hangar”) and LVL.
For a flight from Munich to Zurich, we fill out the required fields and hit “View NM Proposed routes”.
Eurofpl gives us this route:
MERSI6N MERSI Y100 MOMUK Y112 RAVED L856 NEGRA NEGRA2A
MERSI6N is the SID out of Munich and NEGRA2A is the STAR into Zurich.
If you fly online on VATSIM, just file MERSI Y100 MOMUK Y112 RAVED L856 NEGRA without the SIDs and STARs (there are some countries like Germany, that would like to see SIDs in the flightplan, but you can skip that when filing, cause ATC gives you a correct SID anyway).
Now, we take a look at the charts for Zurich: VATSIM Connect | VATSIM - The International Online Flying Network
We hit “STAR”, then “STAR1 AMIKI”.
The STAR Chart shows us the following:
Our valid routes terminates at NEGRA. From there on, we have to fly the NEGRA2A STAR.
NEGRA2A consists of NEGRA, thereafter MATIV, thereafter AMIKI.
At AMIKI, you’ve got an altitude constraint. It’s showing that we should cross AMIKI at FL70 or above.
If the line would not be under the “7000” but above it, that’d mean we should cross AMIKI at FL70 or below.
At the FMC, you have to set the NEGRA2A STAR, the ILS14 approach and something like “VIA” AMIKI (don’t know exactly how an Airbus FMC looks like, just check youtube for that matter).
I guess you’re using Fenix’ VNAV mode to descend.
Now, in the FMC you should go to F-PLN, then change the soft constraint at AMIKI (7000+) to a hard constraint (7000).
This should calculate the descend in a way that allows you to be at FL70 at AMIKI. If you’re too high at AMIKI, say like FL90 or FL110, etc., you’re gonna end up with too much energy (speed or altitude or both) on the ILS.
In Chartfox, we can now view the approach plate:
You now have to fly from AMIKI to ZRH VOR (still 7000+, but you dont need to change that constraint as you’re already at FL70 due to the hard constraint at AMIKI), thereafter directly to the field to KLO VOR, then make a right turn DCT ZH704. At this point, set another hard constraint at 5000 instead of 5000+ as per charts or FMC.
Then make a left turn to ZH413 at max 210 knots indicated airspeed. Take your time, dont hurry.
While turning, continue descend 4000ft and arm the LOC and G/S at you Autopilot panel.
Now you should be on the ILS14 with a well managed speed, correct altitude and a stable approach.
