I would highly appreciate a macOS Version of MSFS2020.
I know it sounds stupid at First. But im confident that Apple Macs market shares will grow very fast in the near future. I think with Apple now producing their own top notch chips, it’s just a matter of time until ARM Macs will become more than capable of running MSFS2020 smoothly!
Also, just a matter of time until Microsoft will have to introduce ARM architecture to their world more closely.
Plus, i think, xbox’s SOC is already an arm architecture chip?
Overall probably not an easy project, but i think still worth while, especially considering the growing mac user base as well as the spending power of mac users in general!
Cheers,Tom
I’d love to see how many FPS Apple’s M1 could achieve. That said, I would expect that MS would have to port DirectX to macOS or for Asobo to port the game to Metal for this to be possible. Sadly I can’t see either of those things happening anytime soon, let alone Asobo having the bandwidth/budget to justify such an investment for such a small gaming market.
Haha, probably true. But to be fair I think apple has never made such a leap forward. Also Apple was never as interested as nowadays to get as many Macs out there as possible, so they can earn on services & cut revenue from app store provision and such. And finally i think, there are more overall apple users than ever before, interested in trying out those hyped & relatively cheap priced M1 Macs. As there are quite happy with their iOS devices / Apple Eco System! So guess this are some fair points compared to claims made since 1984!
Also, do not underestimate the X-Plane Mac community, i know quite a lot!

I guess that is the bigger issue here. Converting everything to metal & such!
I know X-Plane just recently did it (coming from OpenGL) & and it resulted in huge performance/FPS boosts (both vulkan & metal).
Anyway, i am pretty sure, Asobo & Microsoft are far to deep in their MS universe to even actually consider macOS, at least anytime soon.
After all i was just curious how many others would be interested in a macOS Version.
Cos i am sure there is more than 1000+ mac owners reading through this forum!
So guys, keep voting it up.
Cheers,
Tom

I know… but we can still wish for it!!
Hello everyone.
I agree that there is a version for MAC.
I vote for it.
I use Mac to play with FS2020, through Boot Camp.
I’m doing quite well. I reach 30 to 35 fps with 2K resolution, with any type of scenario, weather and plane.
I’m happy.
Regards.

Hi Garay160862,
cool thx. May i ask which Mac you are running it on?
i guess it’s an iMac? But what are your specs? And what graphic settings do you use? Medium, high etc!?
Many thanks, best regards,
Tom

What is or isn’t joy & cloche support?
Regarding the M1:
FlightSims are pretty CPU Intense, usually not well multicore optimized, MSFS is no exception, but this is where the M1 shines, single core perf!!
i guess with the right tweaks you could make it work (>10fps)!
Anyways, the here idea is to have an MSFS version for Apple chips CPU(/GPU) in the years to come. Because as we all know MS, you have to ask for it now, to get it in 5-10years!
Of course Tom.
My team is as follows:
Imac Intel Core I9-9900K
CPU 3.60 GHz
RAM 64 GB
Graphics: Radeon Pro 580x
GPU 8 GB.
I run the game on 2K HIGH settings.
Can I ask you, what specifications does your MAC have?
A greeting.
Hi there,
Thanks, sounds really good!
I currently run an old early 2011 13” MBP. No chance of running MSFS here!
but i plan on upgrading to either M1 MBP or a later iMac!
Unfortunately no bootcamp on them yet.
But i guess sooner or later MS will come back to ARM based Windows…
MSFS runs fine on Linux using Steam Play / Proton (Wine) with a few missing features (ATC voices). Wine works on macOS as well but I don’t think anyone managed to get MSFS to run due to abysmal graphics drivers on macOS. MSFS is a DirectX game. DXVK is used to translate to Vulkan on Linux but you would have to slap MoltenVK on top to translate to Metal on macOS to get anywhere close to meaningful graphics performance.

You would need to use the Steam version though. I took the discount in the Windows Store while using the one month game pass to get the premium deluxe edition. I somewhat regret that I didn’t went to Steam directly. Now that I have achievements and flight minutes locked into the Win Store version I guess I am stuck on Windows as well.
One of the following two things that will never happen would have to happen for it to even technically work.
MS makes a macOS version of DirectX.
MS/Asobo rewrites MSFS for Metal or MS/Asobo rewrites MSFS for Vulkan and Apple fully implements Vulkan. Yes I know there is an app that lets you run Vulkan on Metal but I’ve heard its not that great.
Of course not, none of the game studios publishing for Windows ever made a Linux or macOS Version. Feral game studios and a couple others port them to OpenGL or Vulkan when there is enough revenue to be made. The rest was done by the Linux community over decades. Valve contributed a lot to it as well and hides it all in Steam. You can play AAA titles like Doom or Cyberpunk this way just fine. In fact I exclusively played PC games for the last four years or so on Linux. Sadly, MSFS uses Windows-specific features like Azure Speech. This tech was not implemented in the WINE-Project, thus you won’t have ATC voices.
Hello! Is somebody aware of the results running MSFS on bootcamp using an eGPU?
Yes, I suspect there is somebody who is.
