Unfortunate I was not able to get the 4090 (yet) and I will not support scalping. DDR4 or DDR5 seems to have little or no impact on MSFS, so I took DDR4-3600 in XMP mode.
The System is great. 11 Fans total, air cooled. Still quiet in non 3D and reasonable with MSFS running. No temperature issues. They are monitored in Realtime with recording of peaks overtime.
With the FENIX Airbus A320 I hit a “perfect” balance, where the Main Thread limitation and the GPU limitation are close together. While the GPU is on its limits (95%-97%) the single Thread Performance of the 13900K is also reached. The CPU overall is fine, but the single Thread use is on 100%.
Settings are on ULTRA, DX11, no traffic (OFF), no ATC, otherwise out-of-the-box Ultra settings for everything else in MSFS. In Windows 11 Core Isolation is OFF. AV on/off made no difference for me.
I guess this is the current limit of Consumer technology.
If anyone has interesting comments or tweak ideas, let me know.
First of all, download HWInfo - that will give you a far better idea of what is happening on the CPU side while running MSFS. My 13900KF is currently overclocked using TVB and core usage, and will occasionally boost up to 4 cores to 6 Ghz. When all 8 P-cores are used, it will run them at 5.7 Ghz - up from the stock 5.4 Ghz. This helped squeeze out a small performance uplift, but less than <5%. This is how MSFS behaves on my 13900KF, where all 8 P-cores are used and very light loads on the E-cores.
Unfortunately, the only way to improve mainthread limitations is to lower terrain LOD. Terrain LOD is by far the biggest performance hit on the CPU that any other setting. Based on the screenshot you’ve shared, I would assume you’re using terrain LOD at 400. Try lowering this to 200 or 300. This will reduce the visual draw distance around you, but can significantly improve performance as terrain LOD >200 takes a massive performance hit on the CPU.
I would encourage you to try to enable frame generation on the 4080, as you will double your current performance and you can increase terrain LOD back to 400. This will require you to enable DX12 and turn HAGS on.
I can confirm. I have just bought the Nvidia RTX4090 from the official Nvidia here in France (it was easy, new somehow lowered price !). Frame generation together with TAA gives an incredible FPS boost and an excellent visual quality that can even be increased pushing the upscaling factor above 100. I feel like if my computer has been built in the year 2050 ! This videocard is so quite and cool if compared to the RTX3090FE. I guess the 4080 show the same capabilities.
TY too! I did not try Frame generation yet. I will try it out. My 4080 has the same DLSS Version as the 4090. I am out for business this week and will set this up once back. Did you notice any degradation of the PFD and other displays with Frame generation ON?
The only visual issue I noticed was while panning. The AI interpolated frames don’t keep up very well with fast panning. There was no noticeable issues with the glass displays on the PMDG 737.
