Map mode

Is there a map mode in MSFS? The old version of MSFS had a map mode. Now when I try to fly, I have no idea where I am or how to get to the destination airport.

This sim is overwhelming. I still can’t figure out how to use the nav aids or how to follow (or create) a flight plan. I’ve mostly been using the Cessna 172 and haven’t figured out what most of the knobs and buttons do. I did figure out the autopilot enough to set a heading and altitude.

well , there is the world map … (top right corner of main menu)
you can add some filter pressing espace then “f” and choose the nav aid to be display (at the bottom of the filter list" or use the search box on the top left corner of the world map to find some waypoint,

did you tried the IFR tutorials ? if you have difficulties with following a GPS track (the magenta line) then you probably have to press the little"cdi" key on the gps to switch from vor navigation to gps (dunno if you use g1000 or gns530 )

otherwise from this world map you can load flight plan that some 3rd party website generate (such as simbrief) or you can use skyvectore to plan your trip and report the waypoints on the world map

then when it come to use aircraft avionic etc, best way is to read real documentation or check youtube tutorial to learn about a specific aircraft or avionic

in flight there is a map you can display it s called VFR map and will show up using “v” key

Which IFR tutorials? I tried the ILS tutorial and was completely lost. There’s no instructions on exactly what button/switch/knob to use. I’m using the standard Cessna 172, which I think is the G1000.

Is there a picture with callouts on what each of the knobs do? I’ve tried to follow some of the YouTube videos and the resolution isn’t good enough to see what they’re doing or they simply don’t cover what all the controls do.

I’m coming to the realization that this sim is a lot of work and a lot of learning required. It’s visually way better than MSFS2000, and much more realistic. But the learning curve is steep.

You may want to try littlenavmaps. it does so much more that the VFR map in the sim

@PoorlyJewel000’s right. Little Navmap is brilliant. But it doesn’t work on Xbox. So you have to be on PC.

in general option you can choose an option to get the game displaying an ui label on each knob so you know wich one is the mixture, the power, the propeller, light etc

(many people wont recommend that way and say best is start with a piston aircraft !!! anyway )
I personnally started to learn the sim using a turboprop aircraft (the cessna caravan) instead of a piston doing so removed from my “to acquire” requirement list the leaning process of the mixture and allowed me to focus more on the G1000, understanding how propeller work, what it changes ect
And since this aircraft remain in reasonable speed windows I wasn’t too much overwhelmed when it came to landing phase, I will add its ceilling and ability to take off from everywhere is a huge +

if you want to get a cover of all control then go google for a POH such as this pdf → (link) use the ctrl + f funccion of your browser to search key words and you may easly find what you are looking for.
e.g I did put panel, then scrolled few of the occurences mentionned earlier in the manual to finally end on this page

(after free to you to search and read about every switch by opening another tab of this same pdf to avoid to scroll back everytime)

indeed the learning curve in long and not easy, many information to ingest at start.
also Asobo aircraft have good and down side, all switch are not operational wich mean it s great to learn your not distracted by minor feature such has climate control or more complex electric system. it s sound great but also is a limitation

later I learned a lot by investing in 3rd party aircraft model labeled as study level, wich basically mean everything in the cockpit is functional, checklists are complete and with the run up, pre flight etc you go over each feature of the aircraft to see if it work as expected.

when you will want to understand why something goes wrong (like why I can’t catch an ILS, why my VOR doesn’t show radial etc ) ,you will have to scroll this forum, or few tutorial.

To reassure you : once you are familliar to few aircraft type, you will realise it s basically in every aircraft of the same type more or less the same mecanism.

also having a goal in my flight by using a career mode / ecosim such as FSeconomy helped me to be more regular in my way to jump in the sim and brought me a lot of motivation and satisfaction

That’s just what I’m looking for. Thanks!

Can’t find any map in the 2024 similar to 2920. The V function doesn’t bring up a map anymore.

Same problem here with Map and also Navlog. They are available and wont map to any buttons whether Alpha XPC or even the Keyboard
