Micro Stutters and Performance Degradation on Flights

Description of the issue:

After 20-30+ minutes of flight I get performance degradation and the sim goes from a really good performance to barely 10fps. Restarting the flight doesn’t resolve. I have tested on all settings from ultra to low. Same on everything.

It’s just like the micro stutters we had back in the early 2020 days after a longish flight or on approach/decent? I thought it might just be in the fenix on 24 due to being in experimental but i had it in career mode flying at 2000ft over Holland in the diamond on a VIP mission and now also with no mods at all. Just had it again on decent in the fenix into EGKK and had it a few days ago again in the fenix landing into the new inibuilds ibiza. Doesn’t matter what settings i change or try it keeps happening now on every flight. Sim is absolutely fine when i load in and take off/cruise. It’s just when i get on decent to around fl040-080 and below where you see the ground textures more.

Rizen 7 5800x3D
RTX 3080
32GB Ram
Dedicated M2 1TB
Running 1440p

Temps all run fine, ram and memory all within limits and not maxed out and Frames limited to 30fps.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

Yes, removed and tested and still the same issue.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

Every flight now, more so in the airliners but I did replicate it in the diamond on an hour flight.

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Load flight
  2. Fly for more than 30 minutes
  3. Micro stutters start usually on decent or nearer the ground/on approach. When you land the sim becomes like a slide show.

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

No

[PC Only] Many issues may be due to an outdated graphics card. Please state your Graphics Card Driver Manufacturer (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD) and Version:

All drivers and settings are completely up to date on everything on the pc.

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

Micro Stutters on decent/approach or after around an hour (Is it a memory leak?) - User Support Hub / Install, Performance & Graphics - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Today I’ve spent 3 hours uninstalling and re-installing the sim, community folder and add-ons. Can safely say nothing has changed and it still has micro stutters into a flight. I have noticed it actually starts at cruise as i could see it stuttering every second in a daytime flight after around an hour into cruise. This time it was over France and into Germany.

Its clearly a bug in the sim with either LOD and connection to the internet/servers. I have 1GB internet so it definitely isn’t my speed. Just very frustrating to be back where MSFS 2020 was 3 years ago with the same bugs!

So I thought id fixed my issue. I did a complete uninstall of the Nvidia drivers using DDU Uninstaller. Complete fresh install of my GPU drivers and that was the magic key. VRAM usage is back to normal, no micro stutters and the graphics are the best they have been using DLAA and now the frame gen mod on my 3080 and a steady 105 FPS in the Fenix.

If anyone is having graphic issues then definitely give this a go. Pain in the backside as its a bit of faff but it fixed my micro stutter issues and sudden drop in FPS upon landing.

Newest Nvidia driver installed (566.36) December 5th 2024 release. All other drivers are up to date on my rig including mobo, windows 11 and cpu drivers.

Might be worth a go if your having performance issues.

Hope this helps some out, i know it wont fix everyone’s issues as it still has its bugs but this just might help a few.

Here’s a link to the display driver uninstaller software.

The next day after a few flights my micro stutters were back even though the performance was still fine.

Moved to User Support Hub Install, Performance & Graphics since a solution has been marked.

Sooo, After 4 good flights, I’m reporting it back as a bug. Now back to a stutter fest on approach to CDG. Seems its a scenery caching issue as flying around the UK was fine. Micro stutters are back but FPS is still at 75FPS on DLSS with DLAA selected and frame gen. Frustrating as i thought id sorted the micro stutters.

Clearly the sim still has this issue and isn’t driver related like i thought.

I’ve just found that whilst having the stutters, i reset my rolling cache and the stutters went. I set it at 100gb initially, re-typed 100gb and pressed save and the stutters went. Its a cache issue for the micro stutters. Hopefully we can get it fixed whilst this seems to be a work around now for the micro stutters.

Just re-type the same amount you set in your rolling cache and press save, and it should sort out the stutters every second.

Any rough idea on how quickly the rolling cache file fills up? Let’s say I’m on high settings and have it set to 100gb - will MSFS “try” to use up all that 100gb in one flight, or does it take a few flights?

Just curious if you have any anecdotal evidence, and if maybe it’s good practice to refresh the rolling cache before every flight (and wondering if that’s “enough” for it to not fill up in one flight).

I have no idea but on 100gb I started getting stutters around the 2nd or 3rd flight. Each time without fail after refreshing the cache. I’ve had two days of roughly around 6 flights plus 3 hours of career and not one micro stutter since deleting the 100gb cache and setting it back to the standard 16GB.

Like i said previously I’ve also set my pre cache to low for now and that’s solved all my vram issues. Yesterday was as good as 2020 has been for me over the last few years, if not even smoother.

Unfortunately it seems the update hasn’t done much good for me, left on the settings from before, the sound crackle is back, my RAM usage is now the highest its ever been at 96% over London, I’ve never ever seen over 80% before the update and on 2020 it was never above 55% usage! I have 32GB. I know the recommended was 64, but prior to the update it certainly wasn’t this high. Solve some issues, but make some others worse.

I just did a leg from New York to Toronto, about 1 hour flight. Right before touchdown, stutterfest similar to what you describe. I had it before, but not everytime. In all other flight phases, FPS are just fine, really good actually.

Will check what I set my rollling cache to… I think something like 30 GB. I will increase to 100 GB and probably delete the cache before a longer flight from now on.

It is frustrating that the whole experience gets literally ruined when the sim becomes a slidshow right at touchdown.

4080S
64 GB RAM

So 64 GB will most likeley not overcome this issue. However I noticed that right when the stutter fest began, my cpu usage peaked, cpu temperature peaked and this did not change until I canceled back to main menu. This was a clear difference to the normal cpu usage I have when the sim behaves “normal”. RAM usage was between 28 - 30 GB the whole session.

Have a look at this other post made mate. This also explains some stuff about the cache I found.

Thanks for all the information. I just repeatet exactly the same flight from yesterday, I deleted my rolling cache before the session and increased it to 100 GB. Unfortanately it changed nothing - same stutters at and after touchdown. :frowning:

Prior to patching I uninstalled and reinstalled the sim. Prior to the newest update performance was quite good and smooth. Now late in the landing phase FPS slowly drops to single digits. If anyone has a lead on what might be causing this I’d love to get to the bottom of it.

I made a strange observation. I just restartet the sim, again with fresh rolling cache. This time directly loaded a free flight at Toronto Pearson International.

Stuttering was exactly as before when I landed here. This is new. Quickly jumped to other big airports… FPS are smooth. Back to Toronto => Stutterfest. As soon as I leave the airspace above the Airport, FPS go back to normal. So this might be related to this specfic airport, because on all others I tested so far it was fine.

Dont want to drive this thread off topic since this might be not related to the rolling cache stutters, but nevertheless I wanted to share. Maybe someone also has very bad performance on CYYZ.

The solution that worked for me was deleting the rolling cache and then leaving it at 16gb that it’s shipped with. I’ve ran the game for a week now and the micro stutters have gone. But I do have performance drops but no where near as bad as when I had my cache set at 100gb. Once I’ve landed and it settles the performance comes back.

I’ll try this as i have 100gb set.

Do you also have pre cache still at low?

Just found this for settings that might help a few out

Hey guys, found a thread here which explains at least my stutter at CYYZ. Seems it is a bug for many airports, introduced with the latest patch. It is already known and fixed in an internal development branch of the sim.

Fingers crossed they have sorted this issue globally, not just at one airport they discuss in the post. We could do with a hot fix for this.
