I absolutely do not understand why they continue to do this. In half the cases I’ve seen, there is no and has never been an airport there. In others, it’s a long-since abandoned airport, and only in rare cases does it depict an actually-used airstrip.
However, when that’s the case, it’s often a private strip that is unregistered and uncharted (and usually barely used). You don’t actually have to register these types of strips with the FAA, so in those cases there is no LID.
But I can’t think of a case (in the US at least) where there is any value from having these generated in the sim. And the ICAO code and assigning it to the nearest city is asinine. Gives it a legitimacy and confuses the heck out of people. Not to mention I think this is one more reason the real-world navdata doesn’t play nice with the sim.
I’d report instances of this to the master airport thread (as I know you’ve already done with others). Keep hitting them with this so they become better aware and do away with this nonsense (or do it in a less obtrusive way).
