Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 vs 2020 - My Comparison Videos

  • Added the link of Graphic Presets + DLSS + Frame Gen comparison with on screen metrics video added. Please keep in mind, this is just to show if there is any difference between 2020 and 2024 since I probably getting limited by my CPU (which is a 5900X) even though i have a RTX 4090.
  • Video of Schiphol Take-Off and Climb video comparing different Weather Presets has been added.

Thank you everyone for giving your time. Please leave a comment if anything gets your attention, i will try to fix that.

I guess you don’t use VR? A precise VR performance comparison would be great to showcase just how bad the discrepancy is, especially at higher resolutions.

I use VR (Quest 3) but not with MSFS2024 yet. If i can manage to show Metrics with VR I can try to do something like that.

Thanks for the idea. :+1:

The atmospheric lighting in MSFS 2024 is better in my opinion. 2020 seen alone is great but in comparison looks tinted by a slight sepia tone. In some overcasts and time of the day it used to have a sand storm type of hue.

I think 2024 has a much better autogen coverage for areas in the world that had mountains with bare slopes. I noticed enhanced autogen building height but I need to check more. All in all, 2024 seems a step forward in world rendering and atmospheric light on my PC. I did not verify but I guess the dark volcano ash cloud tops are fixed now with the new lighting system?

The only thing that could in my opinion make people prefer 2020 is the server based streaming / LOD that might not always refresh and produce sharp textures like 2020?

I can’t wait for the Tobii tracker to be fixed so I can enjoy some time and test it properly in multiple scenarios , settings etc.

2020 looks way more realistic to me. 2024 looks cartoonish, as if the clouds were painted. But that’s just my opinion.

I agree that in far away clouds in some type of coverage vs time of day, I got the following cloud look that seem standing out and look drawn
Could be also related to LOD?

But in other type of coverage / weather / time and distance, I got very nicely rendered clouds:

And I like the new cirrus coverage for sure!

The sun and sunsets are a dramatic improvement. Also the cockpit lighting is much improved. But daytime lighting is too bright so much so I had to turn the brightness on my monitor down quite a few notches compared to 2020. It needs some fine tuning for sure. When I fly 2020 above the clouds with some holes in the clouds and can see the ground from above, It looks pretty ■■■■ real. I haven’t seen that yet in 2024. Live weather looks a lot better than those static presets.

Thank you so much for the videos. I ‘scanned’ them quickly (because momentary lack of time). My impression is that 2020 looks even ‘nicer’ than 2024. Maybe because of warmer colors. And at least for me 2020 doesn’t look less detailed in general than 2024 (which uses much more GPU power as you can see in some videos). So at the moment 2024 doesn’t make much sense to me. I’m not interested in stuff like career mode

MSFS2024  Where IS everyone? ITS HEATHROW!

AOZ67

After i have seen your great contribution.

I wonder, what has Asobo achieved with all those big and spectacular changes they claim to have made in their new release. I see no major graphical improvements, but wobbly planes, no performance gain, lots of bugs and not a user-friendly interface. In particular the controller setup is very user unfriendly!

So I’ll keep flying with the stable 2020 version.

To be completely fair, the lighting and clouds look a lot better. And the displacement mapping would be cool if it didn’t completely kill performance. Same goes for the new trees, plants, and animals.

Better water too. But that’s about it I think, and really important stuff like ground textures look a lot worse because they usually don’t load properly.

And because performance is so much worse (at least in VR), everything as a whole looks a lot worse because you need to lower resolution and settings to get anywhere near the previous levels of performance (without actually reaching it).

I completely empathize with your frustrations. The odd thing is that it seems system-specific. I have better VR performance in 2024 with similar settings and am thoroughly enjoying low-&-slow flights with all the graphics improvements and displacement mapping (13700,4080,Q3/VD,Win11).

It makes me think something is putting the brakes on in your specific config.

Doubt it, it’s a fresh install of W11 and I don’t have any unusual settings. And the vast majority of VR users seem to be reporting worse performance, especially those running higher resolutions.

Thank you everyone for the comments. Happy to see that the videos are useful.

I am working on 2 videos now, but i have to hold on to VR one since i have some random performance issues (i guess need to lower graphics  ), sorry for that. The other will take some time to make.

As for 2020 vs 2024, still cant decide. Sometimes i enjoy 2020 visuals, sometimes 2024 visuals. I thought I would like 2024 immediately and ditch 2020, but it looks like I am on the same boat with lots of people that commented. Not ready to uninstall 2020 yet.
