Microsoft Flight Simulator's Japan vs Real World

A few comparisons with real world pictures taken by myself over the years.

Akihabara, picture taken exactly at the same time Bing shot its photogrammetry, apparently, September 2014, just after the release of Destiny.

The view from the deck of the tourist information center in Asakusa.

View from Tokyo Skytree

The view from Yokohama Landmark Tower

Kabukicho. Fans of the Yakuza series should find this familiar :joy:

View from the observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office in Shinjuku. You’ll notice a couple of skyscrapers are missing. Not sure it’s because they’re newer or the sim missed them.

And for the JRPG fans, the Square Enix headquarters in Shinjuku. Funnily, looks like the speed limit has been increased from 40 to 50 Kph since Bing took the photogrammetry :joy:

All in all, the city feels so familiar that nostalgia is flaring. I usually go for work three-four months a year, and I’ve been unable to due to corona. Miss it a lot, and it’s really nice to see the familiar sights.

I’m just cruising past Hiroshima. The graphics are amazing! Waves, reflections, buildings, forests, water masks… everything. I can’t imagine the work it takes to do this, as most of doesn’t seem to be autogen or photogrammetry. Looking forward to Tokyo.

Could not agree more @anon99207371. I am at the same location. I think we are both on the same advertised Discovery Flight through Japan. It is fantastic scenery. And the sim is performing perfectly including automatically following the set gps path. Fix the many many bugs, especially for those who cannot even use the sim, and do regular world updates, and we are in for a real treat for many years I think. Cheers

Hey @anon99207371, i cannot actually see you in the air right now with all the other fliers. Wondering why? Cheers.

Hmm… don’t know. I haven’t seen another airplane yet. Is there a setting to turn that on?

@Hambone6563, Are you doing the Discovery Flight advertised on the home page of the sim? Cheers.

I’m not. I didn’t know about that.

@anon99207371 that explains it. Enjoy your flight. Cheers.

Enjoy yours, too!

It’s hard to miss. It’s on the top right when you open the sim. But you may already be doing that and simply have online gameplay off?

That’s the event that puts you in the King Air from Nagasaki to Tokyo.

I had alot of fun doing the discovery flight seeing the detail and POIs,etc.

Anyone spotted a bullet train to race yet?

Yep. That’s what I did!
