Microstutters ever 5-10 seconds - TLOD-related

In the last week FS2024 has been running mostly great in VR for me, EXCEPT there is now a small but annoying issue that seems to have returned from 2020 (at least for me)

This happens on both of my HMDs (both steamVR and displayport), no matter whether capped to 45fps (90hz) or 75fps uncapped (75hz).

Basically, fps is stable and runs very smooth, but every 5 to 10 seconds I catch a CPU spike (clearly visible in FPS VR) that causes a small hitch. Might sound minor, but it’s very immersion-breaking when everything is usually so smooth. As I said this only started happening in the last week and I don’t think I changed anything. FS2020, where I had the exact same issue for a while, doesn’t seem to be affected.

It’s not a performance issue per se and I have plenty of headroom, frame times look good etc. It seems I can get rid of the issue by dropping TLOD to 10-50, possibly even up to 75. From about 80, the hitches come back in irregular intervals. FS2020 behaved the exact same way at the time.

Could it be server-related? I don’t usually blame stutters on servers, but in 2020 it also came and went without rhyme or reason. So it’s the only explanation I had left. Then at some point it just disappeared again.

I’ve already tried quite a few things like all the power management stuff, disabling C-states, disabling unneeded audio drivers, updating drivers etc.

Just wondering whether anyone else is seeing anything like this?
Any thoughts?

I was suffering something similar when I overclocked my CPU and it was hitting power/temp limit.

Consider also sitting all programs running in the background.

Interesting. Haven’t changed anything in that regard though. CPU is not overclocked and GPU is stably undervolted.

Regarding background programs, I run almost none. Also did a latencymon analysis and it didn’t find anything unusual. I’m pretty sure the spikes are coming from the sim itself. Will need to look into it some more.

Try SU4 yet? Just had a super smooth flight.

I may have to download the beta for SU4 cause I just tried to fly three different airplanes and my frame rate was around 12 to 15 and tons of audio stuttering.

I have now. It’s generally running great, but I still get unexplainable CPU hitches now and again, even in super rural areas that shouldn’t be taxing the system at all. It’s related to ground scenery or LOD somehow, it only happens when flying at low to medium height.

I’ve also noticed this problem.
I’m using a Pico4 with Virtual Desktop.
Whether I’m in Ultra or Godlike mode at 72Hz or 90Hz, I experience these micro-stutters.
Currently, the only configuration that allows me to fly in VR is by enabling DLSS in Balanced mode and medium settings to get the most out of my RTX 4070Ti graphics card.

But I’m unable to say if these micro-stutters are related to FS2024 or my graphics card.

Why are you posting with this strange formatting?

I don’t know.
When I validated, I realized that the text was formatted like this

I’m pretty sure it’s down to how the sim is currently handling TLOD. Try turning TLOD and OLOD down to their minimum for a few minutes. The microstutters will most likely disappear

Hi… are you using the map of the EFB during flight? I discovered in my case - and also for others sometimes - stutters happened after opening up the EFB, prior to loading in at the airport or afterwards. Did also several tests flying without touching the EFB and the stutters were not there. It happened to me at least on every Airbus (not with Boeing).

No, I never really use the EFB.

Had the same today, isn’t lack of fps imo, those were stable, looks like some glitch you see in the Matrix movie, only way I can describe it, about every 10secs some sort of shift in the screen. Didn’t matter what settings I used.

It’s gotten a lot better for me since the SU4 beta.

Will try tonight!

That was the worst experience ever in VR. SU4 beta. The ‘Matrix’ glitches even in the main menu in 2D.

Oh the mouse pointer? Yeah that sucks lol. Not too bad though.

Not being able to click Fly in VR is much more annoying.

Did test with SU4 beta, was terrible, but SU3 hags off did it for me. Didn’t need that in SU2 I believe.

Weird. Most are reporting SU4 runs much better due to CPU optimizations.

But yeah HAGS is no good in MSFS, at least in VR.

I did a packet loss test, think the problem is at the servers end, 19% loss. When in VR when you have the spikes, press escape, you can see the flashes in the menu screen. Tonight had a fine performance, sometimes it helps restarting MSFS 2024, getting another server from MS appointed.
