Minor Modifications

I fly IRL from EGBO and there are a number of things that annoy me in the sim as is. It’s not a bad guess to be fair. I’m trying to work out how much effort it would be to correct a few things. It seems like quite a steep learning curve but something I could definitely get into eventually.

To start I’d like to close the runway that is actually closed in real life. Traffic always uses that. And perhaps upgrade the atc to controlled. That’s it.

To me these sound like import and config change. But I thought I’d ask those who do it regularly how tricky it actually is.

As a start I’d suggest downloading ADE. It’s been around for years and covers all versions of FS and P3D. It’s a good place to start making basic airports and modifications. The MSFS version is in beta, but is will easily work for what you need and is well supported by the great community at FSDeveloper.

You will also need to download the SDK for MSFS.

Once you get the hang of it, tweaking airports becomes quite addictive!

I’m sure it is addictive - and hopefully, I’ll stop when I get my mods done…

Downloading now and I think the SDK is downloaded in the actual sim.

If you enable Developer Mode in the Sim, you’ll see a menu appear at the top. One of the options (I think its in a menu called Help or Downloads) is the link to download the SDK. It doesn’t come down as part of the SIM. There are two downloads, one is the SDK itself, and the other is the documentation. Jon (the guy who writes ADE and the guys on the forum are a great bunch and will always try and help. I don’t have the time that I used to, otherwise I have lots more that I would be doing with ADE. Hopefully when the kids are a bit bigger I’ll get more time.

Installed SDK and got the ADE installed and gone through its setup wizard and it found all three paths it needed. I then proceeded to lookup EGBO which it found for me and then it fell over when getting the package stuff from the content. But I restarted the sim and tried again and now it looks like its found something sensible.

So at this point I probably need to find the short short version of the manual. Hopefully not the 38 pager I found the other day.

Ok, so I set the runways to take off NO and landing NO and then build project and it asks if I want to copy it to the community folder.

How cool is that?

Now, I’m not one for mission creep but…

If I wanted to change our hanger and tower for a better one I’m guessing I cannot do that with ADE and would then need to get into FS2020 design mode? There’s a gap in my knowledge between the airport layout and properties and how the autogenerated scenery works or how it can be changed.

I saw a tutorial for Bideford where they changed the hangars to some better ones within fs2020. The question I have is is it possible to have the changes I just made AND also mess with the hangars - or will it do what I expect which is the FS2020 changes will probably just overwrite what I just did with ADE?

You’d probably get better info over at fsdeveloper but you can change the models. You’d need to use exclusion rectangles etc to remove what’s already there and then add models of the hangers you want to your project.

You’d need to build the hangers in something like Blender and then export them in MSFS format… or there may be freeware ones available that you can use with the designers permission in your project. This is where you definitely need to start working through tutorials.
