If anybody in the community can help me solve this issue I’m sure I’m over looking something but I usually fly the Cessna Citation and lately I’ve been doing IFR plans through the main menu before I load into the flight, I went from Las Vegas to Denver and then I wanted to go Denver to Minneapolis, when I created the IFR Flight Plan I selected my parking spot then the runway then the outbound then I switched over to an ILS approach for Minneapolis when I Got Loaded in I noticed on the map it had runaway 8 and then the Waypoint but nothing was connected to it and then 20 miles away from the airport the white line started at a waypoint, in the flight computer it immediately comes up with a discontinuity for the runway to the first Waypoint, what am I missing do I need to activate something in the flight computer? And how and why am I getting a discontinuity? Any help would be much appreciated!
Hi,
Cessna has built many different Citation models. There are two Cessna Citations in MSFS. The Cessna Citation CJ4 and the Citation Longitude.
Which one are you referring to?
whoops, my bad for not listing that it’s going to be the Cessna C4J. the stock one from flight sim
I haven’t used the world map to generate an IFR for the CJ4, but I have seen discontinuities like that before quite often in a variety of jets. In the FMS you’ll need to go to the departures and arrivals menu and specify which runway you will be departing from and then which SID, if applicable. After that is loaded you may then need to manually clear any remaining discontinuities, which in the CJ4 can be done using the CLR DEL key which should put delete into the scratchpad and then you press the LSK next to the discontinuity.
It has been a while since I’ve flown the CJ4 and I don’t have it up infront of me at the moment but that should be enough to clear out the discontinuity. If that does not clear it then you may need to press the LSK for the waypoint after the discontinuity and then with the name in the scratchpad press the LSK next to the discontinuity. Discontinuities are common and normal in most airliners and jets because flight computers don’t want to assume where you’re going next between two phases of flight.
In this case it sounds like the departure was not loaded into the FMS but the rest of the flight plan was. I know a few jets that even with SimBrief integration still require you to manually select the SID and STAR even if the SimBrief plan has it. May be similar for the CJ4.
Okay so I tried exactly what you said about trying to clear the discontinuity and it will not let me it literally says invalid delete when I hit the delete button and then I go up to the discontinuity, I remember seeing a YouTube video on how to set up the flight management computer but because since there’s been an update since then it’s kind of outdated and I’ve tried everything that I can think of and I don’t know it’s bizarre once I get to the start of the new white line I can then go into the flight management computer activated and then hit the rnav and then it will take me along my plans route. I’ve even tried switching runways here at Denver through the flight management computer same thing comes up Runway seven or Runway 8 with a magenta line connected to MANSEQ on the runway
Try clicking on the leg below the discontinuity and then click the discontinuity itself , if I remember correctly the leg should move up , replacing the discontinuity. I’ve done this before but i’m not 100% it was in this aircraft
Yes try what I and also Steve mentioned above. While I thought the CJ4 was one of the aircraft using the DEL method for discontinuities I did mention it may be using the other method where you select the waypoint after the discontinuity and then press the LSK next to the discontinuity.
For background those discontinuities exist because the SIDs and STARs include portions where vectoring is expected, so you would typically be vectored around before hitting the waypoint. They aren’t expected to be hit directly, but in the sim that’s usually the only option with the default/no ATC so clearing them out is usually what I do.
EDIT: here are some screenshots as an example
Discontinuity:
Press the LSK next to the waypoint after the discontinuity to put the name in the scratchpad:
Finally, press the LSK for the discontinuity:
I really appreciate the both of you for stepping in and helping and while that did clear it up I was over excited and got on my way I now ran into another problem… I’ve flown since 2002 2004 flight Sim X and now 2020 which now I’m starting to learn more of the navigation systems though that’s my biggest weakness in aviation I’m trying to learn as much as I can…
After the discontinuity Runway 8 connected to my first Waypoint about 20 miles out as seen above in my previous post, Runway 8 to my first Waypoint is solid magenta but as soon as I reached my Waypoint the magenta line did not switch over and furthermore navhold did not grab a hold of the flight path I actually had to use my heading hold cheat a little bit
So we’ve already figured out how the discontinuity happens and how to get rid of it but what am I now over looking that the navigation didn’t switch over to the next Waypoint and why did navhold not grab on to the projected flight path?
Believe me I tried looking this stuff up on YouTube before posting here and I can’t find any answers especially with the citation again I appreciate everybody’s help here!
If that happens, i just scroll down to the next waypoint and click on ‘direct to’
