When I am trying to go to VR mode Ctrl-Tab or Click VR in general settings. I get the message: Please verify that your computer is set up for Mixed Reality. I have already tried so many things but I cannot get it working in VR. I am using a Pimax Crystal and OpenXR.
No issues with using these settings for other VR programs like DCS.

Same exact situation as OP.
Haven’t been able to get anything from
Pimax that helps.
Has been working fine and took a break for months and now ( after new updates) it won’t work in VR ar all…. Only MSFS 2020
Did anyone find a solution.
Thanks

If you’re getting “PimaxXR version: unknown” it’s most likely that you did not install the prerequisite VC++ redist as instructed on the wiki.

https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe

The next most common error is using the antique Pitool instead of Pimax Play.

I can only add the issue I had with my Reverb G2, which also uses WMR, and connects with DisplayPort.
HP Support asked me what model GPU I had. 3090 Ti.
He said the problem is with the Ti chipset. He suggested I put an Active 4K (I got an 8K-capable model) DisplayPort Repeater inline.

$40 later the problem was solved.

Hi, Thank you so much for the reply.
I am using PimaxXR runtime. I took your suggestion and made sure to install the VC++redist from the link you sent. It installed correctly and restarted but when I start PimaxXR runtime I get the same failed to query version error message and it still shows “PimaxXR version: Unknown”
Is that why I am getting the error message about needing “Windows Mixed Reality” that I never had before?
Really appreciate anymore help you can give me.
Steve

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. I looked up getting one and am will ing to give it a try, but would love to understand how it works , where it is installed and possibly , how it would make a difference on the Pimax Crystal with the Windows Mixed reality message. I don’t understand why I was never having this problem before with the same hardware setup that I am using now.
Thanks,
Steve

Yes that is most likely the issue. This would indicate a missing or a corrupted system DLL if the VCRedist didnt make a difference.

The next step is quite a bit more complicated… you can try it if you feel adventurous.

  1. Download end extract this tool: https://github.com/lucasg/Dependencies/releases/download/v1.11.1/Dependencies_x64_Release.zip

  2. Open DependenciesGui.exe

  3. Find and load the pimax-openxr.dll from the PimaxXR folder (it is somewhere in ProgramFiles)

  4. Look for errors in the dependencies, typically will show with a red icon next to the name of the system DLL being problematic.

Edit: lets also be clear, you aren’t seeing a message from “Windows Mixed Realit”. It seems that MSFS likes to call “Virtual Reality” “Mixed Reality” interchangeably. This is not tied to “Windows Mixed Reality” aka HP Reverb etc per sei. The fact that you are getting the “Failed to query version” shows the VR runtime won’t load, which is the problem to solve.

The HP tech explained that the Ti chipset doesn’t handle DP data to the G2 headset without the repeater. I don’t know why, or why the repeater solved the problem. I also don’t know whether it’s a problem with WMR, or specifically with the G2.

But he asked me right away if I had a Ti GPU, and it sounded like a WMR issue. But I could be wrong. It is weird that you just started having a problem with your Crystal. I’m more and more convinced lately that Windows Updates are at the root of a lot of “Why did that just start happening?” issues.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your trying to help me. I am so frustrated having spent a lot of $$ and put together a killer System for MSFS and buying the Pimax Crystal (which worked great until the last Update).
I ran the Dependencies program and am getting an error message:
vulkan-1.dll it has a red question mark and exclamation point to the left of the file name. It seems to show that the file is N/A all across the columns.
What do I do with this information? Do I delete it? Do I need to repair it?
Can I reinstall something to make it work correctly? Please advise.
My system:
Windows 11 64 bit
Nvidia RTX 4090
AMD Risen 9 7900X3D
32 GB RAM
2 Firecuda 520 drives

Thanks for any help you can give me

OMG!!! You are my hero…Before I heard back from you I thought maybe there is another version of that same “vulkan-1.dll” file on my PC. I did a search. Found several instances of the .dll file and copied and pasted into the PimaxXR folder.
Restarted and then when I ran the PimaxXR runtime, it showed the current version number for the first time since this started. Crossed my fingers, started up MSFS 2020, started a flight..CTRL-TAB and PReSTO…went right into VR and working great…THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH for leading me in the right direction. I never would have figured that out without your help.

Interesting and I’m glad it’s solved. That vulkan DLL should be installed by your GPU driver most likely, but it’s possible that another copy was put there (or maybe you installed a mod for another game that broke it). A GPU driver reinstall could have helped perhaps(?)
