Money Incoming...Help Me Blow It!

So here in the U.S., the government is about to stimulate us. I’m on disability for autism, so I rarely have much extra money, which makes this a perfect time to blow most of it on flight simming. I’m just not sure how to best spend it so I thought I’d ask for some advice.

I currently have:

  • Ryzen 7 2700x
  • RTX 2070
  • 32gb Corsair Dominator RAM
  • Rift S
  • Couple SSD drives

With this, I’ve got MSFS running fairly well. Getting a few crashes now and then, some flashing and jerking, some slow loading big cities, but overall, it’s not bad and I’m happy with it in VR, which means it’s time to break something.

I was a software engineer for 15 years, but hardware scares the ■■■■ out of me. I think the best purchase would be a new cpu, but I’m scared to death of changing it myself. I also have no idea how to tell if I need a new motherboard or power supply to go along with a new cpu.

My other thought is, the system as it is now meets the system requirements for the Reverb G2, so I could buy it instead of a new CPU, but I don’t know if I could really run MSFS on it with this PC.

My final thought was a new RTX 30(something or other) but it seems like my biggest bottleneck right now is the cpu so I don’t think that would give me much bang for my buck.

So, if you’ve actually read this far, thanks, and I’d appreciate any advice.

Tough call. You aren’t going to gain much with a PC hardware upgrade from what I’ve read. What is your controller situation? What about a 3 in 1 printer so you can make your own flight sim hardware on the cheap when the big money runs dry. Great hobby to keep you busy while on disability. You may even be able to sell some of your creations as a side gig.

That’s really interesting, I’ll definitely do some research on that. Thanks.

This ain’t a good time for building a PC, just wait for at least 6 months or so when stock and prices are back to normal standards…
Your current setup isn’t that bad, especially when MSFS DirectX 12 comes out…

6 months? Haha. Bet not. Bet it gets worse!

I was trying to be optimistic…
