Monitor choice for new pc

Hi all, I started using the sim on an Xbox series x with a 65” Samsung 4K UHD tv and I’m waiting delivery of a new pc - AMD5900X and 3080TI.

I’m not sure what to go for regarding monitor or OLED tv. The thing is on the series x and tv setup I had I would pull up my gaming chair quite close to the 65” tv around 4-5 feet away so it looked pretty immersive.

With the new pc of course I want things to look and feel better but would having a small gaming monitor around 27-43” look worse? Should I go for maybe a 50” LG OLED C1 or a 49” gaming monitor? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My desk I’ll be using is 150x90cm to give you an idea on how close I’ll be sitting with the new pc setup.

Thanks!

I fly with a 29" ultra-wide LG which is about 2-3’ away from my eyes. I can say, it’s pretty good. However, I’ve never flown a sim with something as huge as 50". You should probably go to a store where they have them displayed and look for yourself. Maybe ask them to play a captured flightsim video. If I had a choice, I’d probably opt for 36" or so. Guess, it would be enough.

Also keep in mind that size is not the only thing to look at. The response time, brightness/contrast, resolution, the type of LCD matrix — a monitor is a long-term investment. You don’t want to look at a craрpy image on a 60" screen for the next 5 years or so. I’d prefer IPS matrix because of its naturally better colour rendering. I’d also pay attention to light spots from the LCD backlight. My LG has this drawback that when the screen is black, there are several definite light spots. They make night flying unpleasant. That’s something I overlooked when bought it.

Anyway, a monitor is something to look at with your own eyes to make a proper choice. No advice can replace that.

Fair comments thank you. I agree it would be a good idea to go to a store and sit in front of different sized monitors to see what suits me best.

I’m using a normal desk with a 34" 21:9 monitor. For me that’s a very good combination. But I am also thinking about a 44" or 49" 32:9 for better immersion.

Yes I seem to be a little bit hooked on size simply because till now I’ve been sat in front of a 65”.
I will be using the pc and chosen monitor/tv for all round gaming and not just the sim so need to make the right choice for all scenarios. Thanks for your comments.

I have a 5900x cpu and a RX 6800 gpu and I am using a Samsung 49” ultra wide (5120 x 1440).

Amazing!

Sounds good thanks!

When you can wait until the CES 2022 (January)
maybe the upcoming LG OLED 42 inch gaming monitor
could be worth to wait.
Bye, walter

Have you tried or considered VR as an alternative to a screen?

I started with a 43” 4K flat screen and switched to 34” 2k curved screen. I prefer the 34” much more.

I also second the notion of looking into VR. Once I started flying in VR, using any screen just not as fun, nor is it anywhere close to being as immersive.

Indeed. But how close to that display were you sitting? 30cm?

Welcome to the dark side by the way.

I have a 65" LG Oled CX, great TV but I probably wouldn’t use it as a PC monitor. Burn in risk when at windows desktop is higher than I’m willing to accept as I also use my PC for a lot of applications where there are static menu’s etc. (Cad software etc)

If you are able to pick up a 50" oled for reasonably disposable prices then sure, that would be a knock out desktop experience.

I presently run VR or 32" 1440p gsync with TrackIR for my PC and at desktop viewing distances this is a good sweet spot for me. Fills peripheral vision pretty much.

To be honest I don’t think it’s for me even though I’m quite naive to the concept so it’s not to say I wouldn’t enjoy it. I’ll be using the pc as a gaming/simming machine so probably better I get a decent monitor or tv I think.

I must say I’m leaning towards a 43” and maybe in the future I’ll consider VR.
I’m not keen on ultra wide screens even though I can see how they would be good for msfs.
Thing is I’ll be playing Forza and call of duty, train sim world etc so think a decent sized flat screen would still suit better for an all rounder.

Very true and I’m sitting around 6 feet away from the 65” tv so sitting 2 feet from a 43” would almost be the same I guess

Oh and yes thanks for the welcome to the dark side :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: I use an IMac 27” for work all day and although since a kid was always into computers and actually had a ZX81 back in the day )) but not had a windows pc for over 20 years so I’ve got some learning to do Thats for sure

Unfortunately I’m not patient enough to wait and been toying with this pc for over a year so when it arrives this weekend I’d like to of already chosen a monitor to be honest.

I bought the Alienware 38” curved. Awesome display with a great panel. The only downside that would make me reconsider this screen is that the backlighting zones are quite prominent. So when flying at night, if using HDR, the smallest of lights on the horizon results in about a tenth of the screen lighting up (so the blacks become grey). This really frustrates me as I wasn’t expecting it (coming from a retina iMac 27”). If I were to buy a screen again, I would seriously consider an OLED.

Give it time… But indeed first things first. Monitor.
FS2020 is head tracking compatible and recommended, I use TrackIR but other more “open source” solutions exist. (Search TrackNoIR for an example)
At present there is no Tobii eye tracking support so I can’t recommend this even though it’s also reputed to be quite an ok solution in those titles which support it.

If you branch out into DCS or IL-2 then close air combat is where VR really shines. Nothing quite like the situational awareness it gives you in a dirty dogfight against some Me 109’s.

It’s pretty good for VFR sightseeing and fast low level aerobatic jet fun in the MB339 in FS2020 too!

Yes never say never that’s for sure
I keep coming back to this - ASUS ROG Strix XG438QR

I was using the Samsung Odyssey G9 49 inch ultra wide which was very good. Recently switch to the LG C1 48 inch OLED, now the Samsung sits in the corner. The OLED panel makes the sim look absolutely stunning.
