A friend gave me a 14" LCD monitor that I’d like to use for an instrument panel monitor to supplement my regular curved 27" monitor. Did Asobo ever get multiple monitors working (ala FSX)? If so, is it possible to set up a second monitor to show only the instrument panel? Is there a “how to” somewhere?
I’m not 100% sure what you are looking for, but I think you are thinking of 2D panels, which can be pulled into their own window. Unfortunately, if that’s what you want, MSFS does not have it natively, and I would suggest dropping a vote for this:
If you want to do this sort of functionality, there is a program called Air Player from Sim Innovations.
You can use premade panels or create your own for any aircraft. And you could put that in a separate monitor.
OK. I have 3rd party instrument panel solutions for the primary monitor, but they are all a nuisance (not worth the effort). I’ve skipped several versions of MSFS and thought somewhere along the line Asobo had finally implemented the long requested multiple monitors which they didn’t carry over from FSX. Thanks for letting me know that 3 years in it’s still on the wish list. I was hoping to use the 14" monitor for instruments like I did in FSX.
If you fly the glass cockpit planes it’s pretty straightforward to use a second monitor for those instruments.
The problem is that you need a 3rd party solution for steam gauges. Air Manager is the main one to use for all sorts of panels for steam gauges but you can easily pop out the G1000, G3000 and GTC for say the TBM or the gauges for the C172 G1000 onto that 14" monitor of yours.
I fly only antique, vintage, and classic airplanes (all steam gauges). So I guess the extra monitor is of no use to me. I played with Air Manager and didn’t care for it (overkill for my needs). I used “Panel Builder” for a while when I first started using MSFS, but eventually gave up on that also, as window management was a hassle for the flight videos I create. I may go back to that as it runs in a window which can be moved to another monitor. But it adds to the overhead of the CPU/GPU load (there’s no free lunch).
Since update 10 you can have multiple windows, which can be dragged to another monitor, and it can have a different view in MSFS (such as the instrument panel).
What with summer activities I don’t have time to try this now, but will as soon as possible.
I have found the answer to my question – can you put a cockpit view on another monitor. The answer is NO. The multi-monitor support added in SU10 merely allows you add a window, and pan that window left/right up/down (or rotate it). Whatever Camera View is chosen is panned left/right to the degree you choose in the General>Experimental section. YOU CAN NOT SELECT A DIFFERENT CAMERA VIEW IN THE SPAWNED WINDOW! So for example the view on your second monitor can not be External/Drone/Cockpit if the main window/monitor is a different camera.
Words can not express how disappointed I am in this limited implementation of the request for multiple windows (monitors).
The only way I can utilize the 14" monitor that was given to me for the airplane instrument paned is to go back to using “Panel Builder” – which requires you to build your own instrument panel, configure the instruments correctly for the plane, and put the window it creates on the smaller monitor – with all the associated hassles and impacts involved with 3rd party addons.
I will create a “wish list” item for the ability to have different camera views in the different windows, and hope that it materializes in my lifetime.
