More RAM memory worth it?

But I do have a question about this in my about information.

Device name HPLaptop
Processor Intel(R) Core™ i5-9300H CPU @ 2.40GHz 2.40 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)

I could have swore when I had 8gb ram installed a portion of that was shared with the GPU. But after putting the 8gb stick in it looks like none of it is shared, I could be wrong.

Your RAM memory is completely separate from the VRAM, could not be the case, maybe something with the virtual memory perhaps?

I always select display only on 2, not duplicate. So the laptop screen is not used. (Don’t worry if you disconnect the HDMI cable the laptop screen will automatically turn on again)

No need to state the obvious.

  1. As MrFuzzy1337 says, there was an SU update which changed everything.
  2. Virtual memory

Prior to SU5 we were finding that more RAM helped, as the sim/game could use much more, in my case regularly using 56GB+ of swap file virtual memory + my 16GB RAM !

  1. The Xbox release changed everything, as they only have 16GB DDR6 total RAM for CPU and video (or 10GB for the S). This meant that they had to nerf the memory used down to 16GB. Annoyingly, this was a month after I bought an extra 16GB RAM to take me to 32GB.

  2. There was a limitation on Windows cache. One of the limitations of Win versions up to Win 11 was that the pagefile can only use 1/8th of the drive. If your drive was 240GB it would only ever use 30GB. There was alos the “you have to set it to 1.5 times your RAM” thing that people loved to quote, which meant that you couldn’t set it to

If you had 16GB or RAM, this meant that 16+30=46 and in my case it was trying to use more that that in areas like Heathrow with lots of traffic. This meant lots of memory swaps and lots of lag and stutter and very low FPS. Once I put in the extra 16 to take me to 32GB it all went away.

Since then I moved to a new board, CPU and graphics card, which were all running fine on 16GB with the gcard at PCIe 4.0 x8 - it all worked well, but the main reason I had to go to 32GB again is that I record things on my PC and it needs more than 16GB to run the recording and the sim/games I record and not stutter and/or make terrible recordings.

For the extra money I would say the £80 to go to 32GB was much better for me, as it lets me use a £300 graphics card at x8 instead of 16GB on a x16 gcard that would have cost an extra £200 and a mboard an extra £100 :¬)
