Pretty small detail, but I feel would make a big difference to realism. Would it be possible to add an animation for waves coming up on the beach? There’s a visual image of it, but it doesn’t move. It would make flying near beaches much more pleasing.
It would improve matters, but first, there have to be beaches - ie the sea (lake and river) levels are incorrect for many places, so the beach is not actually where it should be, and in many cases it does not exist due to low res meshes not allowing for cliffs and sloped foreshores.
It was more to get the idea out there than any expectation that it might be implemented soon. A passing thought while I was flying around I figured would be a nice addition to the end product.
Yes we need.
Would like to see animated waves on shorelines similar to other FS programs
Check again with the wind speed increased. They work 100% and are tied into the wind.
And they looked better at launch than they do now. It kind of looks like that model effect you got on some movies that used slow motion to cover up the fact the waves are around a 2 foot model. The waves look far too big, and too fast. The waves out at sea, including the white caps, look great though, just the waves near the shore look a bit ropey.
Yup, there are waves but the waterline on the beach is fixed. On some other FSs, the amount of beach width changes as waves roll in and out and the white wash on shore comes and goes. FS2020 is OK, but bringing the wave action all the way to the beaches would make it even better in my opinion. That said, the “waves at sea” are nice, but likely too large.
I realized that in the MFS it doesnt simulate the waves in the beaches.
I believe if we could have that effect in the beachs and stones it could give us another experience.
Does it make sense?
Keep looking. Some beaches do have waves. I don’t know why most don’t.
Do you have an example? I just could not find any with them…
I will post a pic when I come across some. I know I’ve seen them in certain spots off the west coast of Peru, the west coast of Japan, and the west coast of Morocco. Don’t expect surfable waves crashing against the shore. It’s not that dramatic. Also, I believe there has to be a strong enough wind.
Wind is important. The wind ground layer needs to have 2 to 20+ knots. 3 knots is enough for lakes, 6+ is for the sea with little whitecaps. With 20+ knots you get really high waves! I usually have 8-11 knots for low level flying. We actually have some beach and surf effects, though not ‘rolling waves’ like DCS has (or simulates). The simulation of waves in FS2020 is flat, but the color of sand and stone beaches changes. It’s not the same on all beaches, even with the same wind settings. Maybe depends on the beach’s steepness. But you can do extrem low level flying along sand beaches and the feeling of waves can be quite impressive and immersive (I fly VR).
My tipp: the Taburet bird addons for Europe and US enhance the beach feeling very much. (I’m not affiliated with it, have payed full price.)
+1’ing here: For me the transition from water to land is one of the main points of missing realism. Some time ago, August 2, there was a posting comparing a photograph with a screenshot - the key point was obviously this transition (the rest, very realistic).
comparision real life vs screenshot from the official MSFS account on insta
I think we have waves but the effect needs to be worked out so i expect that asobo will work through in time i guess.
That is so true, I tried to have a fly-by near a beach and everything looked green along with the fact that there were cars driving on the beach… I hope Asobo will consider this feature in their future update.
The white foamy waves on screen there is not animated, its just a flat texture.
Actual waves breaking against the shoreline would probably require some heavy fluid water dynamic simulation.
The best we can hope for is probably just some animated texture that imitates water up beaches.
I would be happy if they were even able to make water have some transparency and not look like opaque like now.
You’re absolutely right with that. MSFS does not have 3D water, it’s just textured surface. For that it sometimes looks astonishingly good. But they probably reached the very limits of that legacy system. I had hoped DX12 might bring some improvements, but how can you say when it’s still in ‘beta’ (and crashing)?
You are right that it is a flat texture absolutely true, but i look at it in another way for the water itself
You can see is running up to the shore and it is animated and does with the texture create the illusion
Which i think is still in devellopment the same way the team does in hawaii with the colors and textures.
The effects might not be strong enough yet but personally i see devellopment in this.
So in time i think it will be there and asobo and party will devellope a new technique with this.
Also this whole sim is a product off new ways and its constantly under devellopment so they thread with care,
Also to me the word of develloper, it means something like, “looking for things to progress” in this case a part of the enviroment like they did with the weather earlier.
“Soon” is a very elastic word in the flightsim world.
Adding to your idea, beaches look very empty on a sunny summer’s day. I would love to see some crowded beaches.
