Move MSFS2020 to New Drive

I figured it out. But the move option moved only the bit you said not to move :stuck_out_tongue:

Ended up having to manually copy &paste the official and comunity folder to the new drive and point MFS to there when i started it. Ran flawlessly.

Pretty counter intuitive

I am not sure if this was already mentioned, but anyway:
I treated myself to an M.2 2T drive, which meant I could rearrange my existing drives and perhaps make things run a little faster/smoother. I used the free version of Acronis true image to clone my 250GB C drive (the OS) onto my existing old D drive 1T M.2. I now have my new 2T M.2 mounted in a Sabrent USB Hub (fantastic piece of kit) onto which I had already cloned my existing D drive containing MSFS. Once all the cloning had finished all I had to do was switch off the PC, remove the original 250GB OS drive and reboot the PC. Everything booted as normal, except my new 2T M.2 was labled as F drive. I had cloned my existing D drive onto this and used the older already installed 1T M2 for the OS clone (still with me ) So now my old D drive was changed to C drive and the new M.2 2T F drive, I went into disk management and changed the F to D and vola! all my apps came back on reboot. MSFS would not start, so I started the Xbox app and clicked reinstall MSFS, pointed it to the new cloned 2T M.2, and it completed in about 30 seconds. I started MSFS, and it asked to update, I just pointed the update to my new D drive, which is already updated, and it started with no problem. I’m just about to fly my first flight on the new drive.

Not working at all…tried that…everytime I restart my computer the folder I renamed is back to the previous location

Not working either…system says the game is already installed where I want it to be but it isn’t

Hi, what platform are you on? Steam or MicrosoftStore?

And to be sure, you want to move your Communities folder to another drive?
is that right?

Thanks so much for these clear instructions. It worked great!!! I have a follow-up question: what should the rolling cache path be in the new D drive? I noticed it (General Options in MSFS2020) still has the original C drive path - obviously because I did not change it. What is confusing is that I cannot just simply update the C to D in the path since those folders do not exist in the D drive. I welcome any input here. Thanks in advance!

To confirm, this moves the packages, but there will still be lots of MSFS2020 files in my original C drive that will be utilized for the game, correct? That is, these instructions moves the ā€˜heavy’ files to save space. This does not move the entire program to the new D drive and I suppose that is just fine. Can you let me know if I’m tracking this accurately?

No. There will be no Installed Packages" files on the C: drive. That is, if you

  1. Install FS2020 to another drive.
  2. Move it via the FS2020 app ā€œMoveā€ command.

If you manually copy them to another drive, they will still be on the C; drive
unless you delete it.

The Rolling Cache Path box is for you to tell FS2020 where the cache file is located.
That will be wherever you tell it that it is.

It can be on the D: drive or on in a folder on the D: drive.
Or any drive or any drive\folder.

But, you need to create the folder yourself.

Note: If installed on another drive or moved correctly, the only FS2020 files on the C: drive is the 2 GB ā€œLauncherā€ which is mandatory on the C: (or boot) drive.

Yep but only rolling cache file, game settings, control profiles, airplanes settings, cache, cam settings, game cache.

Important, do not, do not, do not move launcher to D,E,F,G …

Move only official and community folder.

I wanted to inform you about some potential issues you might encounter if you decide to move the Microsoft Flight Simulator launcher to another drive or partition.
Different disks or partitions may have different permission settings.
Moving the launcher to a location with stricter permissions might restrict launcher access to essential files, resulting in errors, CTD or launch failures.

MSFS integrates with various add-ons and applications such as FSUIPC, SPADneXt, AAO, Active Sky etc.
Moving the launcher can causing these applications to malfunction or fail to connect to the game.
Remember that making changes to launcher installation location can have unintended consequences so proceed with caution.

Fly safe.

I’ve said this many times, but MS have always recommended installing the sim on C:. I reckon MS know a thing or two about Windows applications, so that’s good enough for me.

The data packages, of course, are another matter.

Yup there’s really no reason to move it because once started MSFS runs entirely from ram/ virtual memory and the app files on C: lay dormant. Usually only drives with scenery on are accessed while you are actually flying.

Where is this MS recommendation?
I’ve always installed FS2020 on my D: drive without any problems.

Storage space used on C: is a reason.

Last time I looked the MSFS install is only about 4 gigabytes. And anyway storage is that cheap nowadays upsizing drives shouldn’t be a problem for any of us. Also all my documents, music etc. is stored on a 3rd drive with only symbolic links shown within my C:\ Users folder, it’s very easy to set up Windows that way.

In the MSFS FAQs.

The installation isn’t that big.

Thanks so much for this. Makes sense. I did not remove the launder at all based on your explicit warnings. Very helpful!

@TenPatrol can you please comment on this follow-up inquiry? Thanks in advance!

Do not touch rolling cache.

Hello hello,
just to confirm what was said by MSFSRonS It is quite possible to move the Launcher…

For my part, the Launcher is on a disk named X: and the Official and Community folder are on another disk named V:

I have nothing on my C: drive and everything works fine…
You don’t have to do this, but it is possible.

We do know that relocating the launcher is possible.
I must emphasize that this is not necessarily recommended. As I mentioned earlier, there are potential issues that can arise from such a move.
Moving the launcher may result in problems with permissions or may have difficulties connecting to other applications.

For these reasons it’s generally best to keep the launcher in its default location.

You are probably right, but for my part I have no problem installing Addons or third-party software. :+1:
In any case, if the Sim works, that’s the main thing. :sunglasses:
