Move MSFS2020 to New Drive

If you use Disk Management to change the H: to D:,

Windows will automatically take care of repointing everything correctly.

Windows 10 knows FS2020 is installed on H:.
When it changes the drive letter from H: to D:,
it knows that FS2020 is now on D: and will point it there..

There is nothing to worry about.

I’m pretty sure Windows wouldn’t change the path in UserCfg if the packages were moved as well.

Thanks for that! Much appreciated

Funny… or not.
From Windows/Apps you can move it. I did move it to D:
Launched game (or sim, lol) and the Cache still was con C:

I move it.

After all this, I remembered that this is also linked to the “Xbox” app, so I entered there.
Only to find that it also has the option to MOVE the install.
And by the way STILL said the game was installed on C:

such a mess.

What Cache are you referring to?

The location of the Rolling or Manual Cache is controlled by the user via Options, General Options, Data screen.

My XBOX App shows my FS2020 has been moved to the D: drive.

What do I know? It was like I said.
After the 1st move and cache move, I still found rubbish on C. And got errors in Xbox app. So I uninstalled the monster.

Reinstalling from Xbox app caused errors, but after some cancelling and restarting pc it installed.

Now I have some phantom directories on D, outside of the game folder I created for the game install (d:Fs2020):
Program files
Windows apps
WpSystem

Mostly empty or protected folders. What a ■■■■ system for a ■■■■ game.

Just got a Surefire Gaming Bunker SSD. Any problems moving MSFS to that? I guess if not, I’ll just follow your initial instructions. Please let me know either way or if anyone else has used this ssd. Thanks :folded_hands:

They are not phantom.

D/Prgram Files for sure is (empty subfolders), and it is soo ugly

I want to own my installs.

FS2020 is not installed in D:\Program Files

MSFS is installed on the drive you wanted so why is it a worry?
However I recommended ‘moving’ the package files (official and community) to a different location and updating the usually hidden UserCfg.opt with the new path. This is to prevent your community addons getting wiped during major updates or MSFS repair. Personally I have these packages on their own SSD to spare any interference whilst playing.

FS2020 installs on the Boot drive.
Or installs as Symbolic links on the boot drive and another drive/folder if you specify another drive/folder for the install.

The Symbolic links point to the actual physical location of the “Installed Packages” as referenced in your UserCfg.opt file and specified by you.

The boot drive is the drive that Windows is installed on.

Is your boot drive F:?

I wondered what those arrow things were on the folders on my C drive for MS FS 2020 after I had shifted it to another drive. All are working fine.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I symlinked my Community folder from a separate drive months ago and it’s been great.
Currently giving this a shot with the Official folder. Will report back after the copy.

Update - it works

A bit late here.
This option only offers to move to a new drive, but no option to select desired folders on the new drive.
If I use this Move option, what files/folders will be moved and to what location exactly on the new drive?
Thanks

Do not, do not, do not move msfs launcher! In some cases problem with insufficient privileges.
