Moving steam files from C: drive to main installation drive

Steam or MSF is using my C: drive to store about 255 GB that include files like aircraft , airports plus other catagories that appear in the main menus such as training, bush trips etc. The total is 255 GB of files. The path to these files on my C drive is: User/owner/app data/ microsoft flight simulator/packages/official/steam/

My main install is on my E drive that has a capacity of 931GB. The GB use of MSF on this drive is 181 GB.

With the use of my C drive to store these files is using up all my C drive space and I have had to delete aircraft and scenery from the program.

Is it possible to move the msfs files on my C drive to the drive where my main msf install is located?

Hope someone can help me with this issue. Thanks.

The quick answer is yes, but sometimes that can be difficult.
The way to do it is to move the folder to where you want it.
If you can cut and paste it to the new location, you shouldn’t have any other issues.
When you have this complete, find your “Local Cache” folder, and in that the UserCfg.opt file.
In that file, find the line “InstalledPackagesPath”.
Make sure that points to the new location.
That’s it!

I’m a little confused how the install is “split” between two drives while using Steam. My Steam game install is on a 2TB SSD, and my Windows OS / main C: drive is just a 256 GB SSD, with less than half of it in use even with Windows 11 and all my “other” programs installed there.

If you open your Steam client and find the “move installation” option for MSFS, does it allow you to automatically move it to another location? That might be the safest way if it’s available to you.

This is my cache file. I do not see any usercfg opt file.

C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator
file named usercfg.opt

Under roaming there is no msf file
Under local there is “flight simulator”
I do not see usercfg.opt

so go to
User/owner/app data/ microsoft flight simulator

Here is mine.

Found User cfg. Is this correct?

Finally

Yep

Next question. If I move Users/owner/app data/microsoft flight simulator/packages/official/steam to
my E drive. I need to point in the cfg file the location of this file.

official/steam?
or
official and cummunity?

Official/Steam

In notepat or nonetap++ open file named usercfg.opt
Scroll down to the last line.
Take a screenshot and paste into topic.

Here tis

Open folder packages

Maximize window - take a screenshot and paste into topic

Cut that entire packages folder and paste it to the location you want it to be in.
Then go to the UserCfg.opt file and change it using Notepad or similar, remove the old folder address, and type in the location you put the packages folder.

1 Create a new folder on your E drive named MSFS.
2 go to
C > Users/owner/app data/microsoft flight simulator/packages/
Then copy the folders official and community and paste them into the newly created MSFS folder.
3 Open the usercfg.opt file in Notepad and edit the last line. After editing, the last line should look like this
InstalledPackagesPath "E:\MSFS"
4 Save changes and launch msfs

I have completed the task, but have not started msfs yet. Question do I leave the Community and Official files in the C drive?
I am now going to start the app and download and install one of the files I deleted to see if it works
