MSFS 2020 crashing to desktop!

Help!!! My MSFS 2020 is crashing to the desktop after a bit of waiting to load. I did 4 hours playing and it was running with around 50 FPS (I am using i5-10600k for CPU and RTX 3060 for GPU). Then after that flight I decided to try DX11 (I was using DX12 (beta). I am using Frame Generation for the RTX 30 series. I deleted the files for the Frame Gen because the FG is not supported on DX11. I also deleted all the cache on the graphics card but with no joy. Then I made a lot of restarts of the PC but it doesn’t want to work properly. After that I decided to try MSFS 2024 with the newest updates. I ran brilliantly!!! Then I got to this conclusion: my PC is working properly. I’ll try to delete the community folder and I’ll find a solution for this. If that doesn’t work I’ll try to reinstall the whole game. Note I am using the MS store version for the game. I also tried the “repair” option in the Xbox app. But the music suddenly stopped and it crashed to the desktop. If you have a solution for that problem I would like to know. If I am doing something wrong please inform me. I hope it will be fixed soon!!! Thanks!!!

Hi,

What I do when trouble shooting is not delete my existing Community folder.

Instead I rename it to something like Community.mod. MSFS cannot recognize this anymore.

Then I create a blank folder and name it Community. This is the one that MSFS will use when restarting the game.

After completing my trouble shooting I then rename the empty Community folder to read Community.empty. Now MSFS will not recognize the Community.empty folder.
Finally I rename the Community.mod folder, which contains all my addons, back to read Community.

Sounds more complicated than it really is.

I also use AddonLinker but it does not affect the addons which I purchased and are directly installed into the Community folder.
Therefore I find that using the way as described above works better for me.

Hope this helps.

The sim will create that itself even if you don’t.

Do you have the Nvidia App installed? I wonder if it relates to this issue?

Hi @FieldGunner ,

If your question is directed towards me, then the answer is no. I don’t use the Nvidia App.

Ah, OK. It was a thought. I haven’t tested if frame generation made a difference for me. In my case, I was working fine with DX11 until I upgraded my video card from a 3070 Ti to a 5070 Ti.

Hi again,
FYI actually I don’t have any issues with MSFS 2020 at the moment. I just gave my input to @YavorLilov to help him with his trouble shooting.
BTW since upgrading from my 3090 to a 5080, I have great results with my Pimax Crystal Light in MSFS 2020.

@YavorLilov
FYI, with Nvidia driver 572.16/572.42/47/60,70,83 Nvidia app and DX12 selected in MSFS 2020 a CTD won’t occur.

However, with DX11 selected in MSFS 2020, using the same latest Nvidia driver and Nvidia app, a CTD will occur.

Until Nvidia fixes the application and Asobo MSFS 2020/2024, please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

OR

If you need Nvidia app, make sure to select DX12 instead of DX11 in Nvidia app and the profile for MSFS 2020.

OR

If Nvidia app installed go to:
c:\ProgramData\NVIDIA
delete folder named NGX

Nvidia App just updated to version 11.0.3.232 this morning but the CTD with DX11 still occurs.

I found the way!!! I have to press optimise in the Nvidia app. Then I have to set the graphics in the sim again. The DX11 was making problems. Thanks again for the help!!!

I see that you followed exactly what I suggested by switching from DX11 to DX12 in the Nvidia app.

I would appreciate it if you could mark my post as the solution, as this will help other users with a similar issue. Thank you, and I’m glad I could help
