Hi everyone,
Sorry for an old and frequently asked question, but I just recently built a new pc with the following specs:
Motherboard: MSI Pro DDR4 B760M LGA1700
GPU: Nvidia RTX 4070 Super
CPU: Intel I5 13400F
RAM: Corsair 3600mhz CL 16 DDR4 32GB
SSD: Kingston KC3000
When I launch microsoft flight simulator, I frequently get stutters in 1080P Direct X 12, ultra settings with TLOD and LOD both set to 200. With debug mode enabled, as always, I get “Limited by main thread” which is a CPU bottleneck. I’ve tried Direct X 11 but it gets slightly lower fps. I’ve checked for thermal throttling and similar stability issues and my cpu is only at 60 degrees maximum and my motherboard’s VRM’s are not throttling either. I have XMP enabled set to Gear 1 at 3466mhz (3600mhz is too unstable despite increased voltage).
The low fps and stuttering as expected is frequent when flying in New York, but even with lowest graphics settings, it still occasionally stutters. In 1080P ultra, I get around 25 - 30 FPS with stutters, and the game is only somewhat playable in 1080 lowest settings.
I’ve seen many youtube videos playing in msfs 2020 with lower end hardware like RX 7600, and an Intel I5 12400F cpu, yet getting a constant 45 - 50 FPS as seen in the following video: Youtube
I’m wondering if there is something wrong with my configuration or software? I’ve updated to the latest nvidia drivers, I’ve disabled the NVIDIA app overlay, I have overclocking default enabled for my GPU and none of the parts of my PC is thermal throttling or power throttling.
I would try dropping these to 100 or less.
Either turn off road traffic or turn it right down.
Clouds to high.
Beyond that you may want to consider closing background tasks like apps running on the taskbar.
Also consider if you have any antivirus/security software where you may need to set that software not to actively monitor the flightsim and/or the folders it uses.
You specs are on the low side, but not impossible. Here’s how I find the best performance. Set everything to Low or Off with TAA at 100%. Drag the resolution scaling slider until you see 20ms GPU frames and 10ms CPU frames. Then adjust your other settings while still maintaining these frame times. You won’t be able to set them very high depending on the setting. I run my LOD’s at 10 because it’s about flying for me, not watching the terrain. Let us know how it goes.
Hi, no matter how I adjust the TAA slider, even set to the highest, my CPU’s frame latency is still larger than my GPU’s latency. My CPU at highest TAA settings idles at around 20 ms in New York, whereas my GPU is at most 7ms. I’ve tried Nvidia DSR and running msfs at 1440p resolution, and selecting a slightly higher TAA in the game, but now my GPU is at 100% utilisation and is now bottlenecking my game and running the game at even lower fps. I’ve turned anti virus off and even on lowest settings in New York, the game occasionally stutters, and above medium settings, in New York its essentially unplayable. I’ve turned off all the traffic, fauna, vehicles and it barely helps. I’m so confused why other people with lower end hardware then me are able to play msfs in ultra, am I doing something wrong here?
UPDATE:
I reinstalled my windows 11 and reinstalled the game which seemed to fix up my low performance in msfs. In New York ultra settings and TLOD and LOD set to 150, I get a stable 65 fps with TAA set to 4k, which seemed to balance my GPU usage at around 80%. Now the game runs absolutely great, except for some occasional micro stutters, but it is so much more playable!
