Hi everyone…
I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve been trying to fix my problem for several weeks now. I have reset the PC to factory settings several times, reinstalled MSFS several times, read my way through forums, installed old NVIDIA drivers…, all to no avail so far.
Out of nowhere, MSFS 2020 started lagging, making menu navigation seem almost impossible, not to mention the game itself
The MSFS hangs for approx. 1 second every few seconds. The utilization of the hardware does not really change drastically…it is a maximum of 60% for the individual components.
I’ve had this problem before. I can vaguely remember that I reset the PC to factory settings at the time. After that, I had peace of mind for a few months until the problem occurred again.
I’ve been thinking for a while now about whether I shouldn’t just wait for the release of MSFS 2024. However, the fact that no solution to my problem can be found in the vastness of the Internet is driving me a little crazy. I also can’t imagine that I have discovered a new problem here after four years. Hopefully some help might be found here.

What are your system specs please, GPU, CPU, RAM. Do you have a good internet connection?
Go to the Experimental mode and activate the performance, that should give you some indication of whether it’s GPU or CPU bound.
Empty the Community Folder and see what happens (just rename it for now, the sim will create a new one when you restart).
Clear all scenery caches, set Rolling Cache to zero.
Next, change all your graphics settings to default or even to low. If that helps try increasing the important ones a level at a time and checking.
Other things to consider, do you have plenty of room on your hard disk/sim storage as Windows/MSFS needs some headroom to run well. Checking/defragging the disk may help or point to mechanical problems.
There are some good Utube videos on settings which may prove beneficial.
For me … writing this on Feb 25 2025 … about a month ago I started up 2020 and it did a small update … 375mb or something like that, I flew all day no problems. The next day I fired up 2020 and as it was loading right before it got to the main screen it crashed to desktop, tried again and same thing, waited a day … fired the sim up and same thing, googled the issue and no answers. So I re-installed the sim and was able to fully boot into the sim again, but now after 2-3 hour GA flights the sim crashed to desktop as soon as my wheels touched down on landing, googled it with no results. So I wiped my hard drive and completely re-installed Windows 11 and 2020, duplicated all drivers (including NVidia version that had previously been rock solid for 1.5 years) duplicated all Windows, NVidia Profile, and 2020 settings that for the past 1.5 years had given me a very solid and smooth 2020 sim … and now I get stutters on the ground I’ve never had. So I decided to get 2024, installed it and the latest NVidia drivers minus the NVidia app … and 2024 is working smoothly with no stutters while 2020 is still a stutter mess on the ground.
Perhaps it’s something else, I do have an i13900k … but I’ve under volted it the whole 1.5 years I’ve had it, and I’ve always held off on Windows updates until I finally had no choice, but everything with 2020 seemed to go to h@ll after that little 2020 update a month ago, before that I could run Fenix, PMDG, etc. with GSX, and FSLTL on pretty high settings, and with 2020 on ultra with TAA and 200 TLOD and 200 OLOD … smooth and stable with hardly any micro stutters … for a year and a half!
Now I’m just running 2024 and doing mostly mountain/bush flying with butter smooth performance, but I miss my airliners in 2020. I wish Asobo had just left 2020 alone
Specs are Intel i13900k, ASUS ROG Z790 Mobo, ASUS RTX 4090, Corsair water cooling, 64gb ram, Two 2gb M2 drives.
