what exactly are you trying to achieve asking this in a MSFS forum its obvious the answer you will get. Go and ask the same question over on the Xplane org forums and see the answer you get.

I have both sims and MS FS 2020 is way ahead in graphics but I think that the planes handle better in X Plane.

I was just asking a question that’s all. I have never had x plane…I was just wondering …I have seen others make a comment abut x plane. .But I can’t?

No comparison dude. Are u kidding. In what world is x plane better looking. They use an outdated lighting model that when the sun is behind you in cruise lights up the cockpit as if the sun is in the jumpseat. Also the sunsets and sunrises look awful and heavily shaded purple. Even 3rd party devs have commented how it’s hard to even get cockpit colors correct bc of the bad lighting

No comparison regarding scenery. Msfs is years ahead. Only competition is regarding flight dynamics and ifr and night flying. This is still cool on X plane.

MSFS is at the top of the throne right now as far as Graphics and weather go i personally use XP much more then MSFS even with XP’s dated graphics its going to be interesting to see what the next generation of XP12 will have to offer

MSFS is by far the better looking sim when you compare the default install version of MSFS to the default install version of XP. And I mean BY FAR - it’s not even slightly close.

However, it is possible to improve XP graphics with payware and freeware mods. Personally, I got sick of trying dozens of mods, some which conflict with each other, some that are very expensive, so I’m very happy with a vanilla MSFS install. Also, for some stuff you have to invest a LOT of time and disk space(Orthoscenery).

Some people find the XP flight model more to their taste, along with the greater selection of airplanes but if you want a great looking sim, MSFS is the clear winner.

I have all three sims, but I haven’t played XP in months and months. I occasionally use P3D for the PMDG planes, but MSFS is easily 80-90% of my sim time.

To get xplane looking like msfs out the box, would require several large drives, to store it all, and countless amounts of money!

Planes are better more so airliners, but that sim is in its maturity, this is merely just begun,

I own both and have spent a lot of money on xplane I find myself on there once a month, but tbh that’s only for the concorde, my every day sim is msfs

Have anyone seen their blog? The lighting on xplane is being worked on and so are the clouds and weather effects… watch this space!!
I still fly my xplane just as much as msfs. And I have p3d too, been flying in it a lot up to yesterday because of pmdg and a2a. Best models out!!

That’s good, but I doubt they will get google on board for the scenery, and obviously not bing.

So it stilk takes a huge amount of scenery to make it look as good, which is what the post was about.

Like I said earlier I also own xplane, and have 3tb of scenery, and that’s just for the uk and Europe and not all of it!

Current Xplane looks like minecraft compared to msfs.

But next generation of xplane will bring tough competition.

Out of the box, X-plane looks graphically dire. You can make it look a lot better but this with cost you time and a lot of money.
The cheapest is Ortho4XP where you can download satellite imagery and a world height mesh then make your own tiles. This takes a long time and eats up lots and I mean lots of hard drive space.

As an alternative you can purchase scenery packs like the Orbx True Earth series, the advantage here is that Orbx have created the tiles, colour corrected them to remove clouds and include a better autogen and custom made POIs.

Then you need to buy a reshader because the world of X-plane is dull in colour.

And the weather engine, although it can import METAR data looks flat. You can fix that but again it is going to cost you more money.

I have the Orbx TE GB in three packs that covers the whole of the UK, I have several weather programs including a better weather injector and a graphic reshader but still it doesn’t look as good a MSFS.

And all of that was taking up almost 500GB of hard drive space just for the UK. If I flew anywhere else outside that area it was back to the dreadful default scenery. In MSFS you have the whole world in less drive space.

Most comparison videos I’ve seen don’t actually compare against the default X-plane, they often already have custom scenery so you don’t get a true comparison but if we are talking about Graphics only, then MSFS wins by miles.

There’s nothing to discuss. MSFS is better in every way. Xplane weather isn’t working, clouds are terrible, no scenery, airports look absolutely horrible.

I think the answer you will get there, unless the respondent is completely delusional, will be MSFS. As far as visual quality is concerned it is no contest, it’s not even close.

Did you guys see this ? A preview of whats to come in Xplane 12.

I use both sims happily but I relegated X-plane to long haul airliner flights from the moment MSFS hit the market.

Taken both ‘out of the box’ and freshly installed, the graphics in x-plane don’t compare positively with most products from this era, sim to sim or otherwise. I am referring to the world/sky/clouds/lightning of course, the planes are OK.

You can dress up X-plane with both paid and free add-ons - and some hard work - but to be completely honest with you while I would have strongly suggested this approach last year I wouldn’t suggest it now: if you fly GA, or anything flying under 30000ft spare yourself the money, the time and the work as MSFS looks vastly superior and GA planes fly nicely (especially some of the recent offerings like the JustFlight Arrow).

If you’re more into modern airliners (flying above 33000ft), where the scenery below isn’t that visible then you might enjoy more systems accuracy with some (again payware) X-plane 3rd-party add-on planes. But again, I wouldn’t invest in X-plane 11 right now or any DLC for it: X-plane 12 should be nearing and I’d rather wait and see what it will bring to the table, including compatibility with existing add-ons and pricing for possible upgrades of such products.

By that time we should also have some very accurate planes in MSFS - then it’s gonna be an interesting comparison.

At any rate: always fly what you like and enjoy your experience!

Competition is good and there is no reason why you can’t fly two sims (or more). Personally, I have stopped using X-Plane 11 since MSFS has been released as visually it is vastly inferior but if X-Plane 12 is released, especially when looking at the latest tech video Laminar just released, I see X-Plane providing real competition for MSFS in the not so distant future.

It looks like it’s catching up to MSFS in that regard. That was to expect. They have a great new engine. But honestly there is not enough footage to make a conclusive call.

Also the rest, like trees, weather, etc. don’t look much improved. So either it’s a old build / feature branch, or they still have a long way to go.

I’m just guessing, but I don’t expect a release 2021. Maybe some sort of beta.
