MSFS 2020 VR SETUP Quest 3S

Hello good morning fellow Pilots!

First of all thank you for providing this Area as a place for discussions and support.

Long Story short, i recently gifted myself a QUEST3 S Headset for my Birthday.

I have been flying mainly flying Glidersim [havent even finished the training on cessna yet] on MSFS2020 on high/Ultra Settings with my PC .

Mainly in the Area where i was flying those Plane IRL back in the days when i was younger, even owned a PPL C License [which is expired by now] . So of course as soon as i received the headset i intended to use it with my PC in order to fly in VR at my old Airport EDLB.

Here comes the not unexpected Trouble, while on PC everything is smooth and crisp, on VR it pretty much stutters, instruments are hard to read. I have, dont ask me how managed it one time to have hand controlls active [ that was nice even not perfect but settings trims by moving my hand instead of the quest controller was nice]

I tried playing with settings in the Quest 3s, my PC OPEN XR, Debug Tool and everything used Steam VR , used Quest Link App, everything, im not really getting a smooth experience. And that confuses me a bit as my PC is more than capable to run msfs. Yes its not high end anymore [as its 5 years old when i build it myself]
My Internet also shouldnt be an issue as i have about 980 mb down AND Up

My Specs are the following.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
NVIDIA RTX2070 Super
X570 Aorus Elite Mainboard
64GB GSKILL DDR4 RAM
Oh edith says im also using the X56 hotas from Logitech

and it all runs on a Samsung Evo 970 SSD M2.

I have read tons of guides on settings, YT Video but im struggling to get the stutter away, sometimes its better, sometimes worth. Tested all those guides, so far the best Result is when i simply leave it on NVIDIA App optimized settings…

Oh and how to i get hand controll back… have no idea how i got that one time…

Thanks for any ideas i havent read so far on how to improve smootheness

A 2070 is simply not powerful enough for 4k VR

On what resolution is that?

Sorry but your PC specs are a bit too low for very good VR with a Quest 3s imho. Streaming VR takes a lot of PC power and with headsets like your Q3s they can use up an extra 10-20% of your GPU because of encoding requirements that dedicated VR headsets with a DisplayPort connection doesn’t need to do. I’d suggest a rtx4070 would be the minimum gpu for VR with msfs 2020. You may have been better off buying a dedicated vr headset like a good used Vive Pro or used Index.

You should still be able to get a decent result with most PCVR apps using either a usb3 link cable or wireless with Air Link, Virtual Desktop, or SteamLink. You’re probably best to learn how to use all these and see what works best for you.

Start up by getting less complex pcvr games working well before jumping into complex sims like msfs 2020. You may get ok results with msfs 2020 but your settings are all going to need to be mainly on the low side.

Hopefully you’ll find the thrill of VR immersion outweighs the so-so graphics. You may also want to consider less complex flight sims like Aerofly FS2. This would def run a lot better with your pc specs. I used to run this with an older pc with a gtx1080ti and it ran great. X-Plane 11 might also be a good alternative and also ran great with my gtx1080ti. Good luck mate and cheers.

In general Medium to High, no stutters and crispy funky graphics when playing on pc. I always was more or less under the imprussion that the VR Headset is only kind of an extension of the monitor. But well, will see and continue to test settings

Oh i absolutely enjoy VR GAMING, buying the quest3s was a super duper decision, love VR Games Apps, absoluteky, no problem with motion sickness[ as i am a fpv drone pilot im used to that ] and i enjoy doing that. I guess its time to convince the financial manager aka Wife that an upgrade of Graphic Cards is needed ^^

You still haven’t mentioned the resolution and the render scaling.

VR is much more than a monitor extension. Since you need to see 3D, it needs to render the scene twice from a slightly different perspective. So apart from over 4x the pixel count (assuming you’re gaming on 1920x1080 now) it also has to deal with double the render load.

Hello pilots.

Got a simple question for VR Performance:

I run MSFS2020 in VR on the following hardware: Ryzen93D, 4090, Asus Notebook on a Quest 3. I use Smooth Flight plugin.
So far - with some tweaking - performance is quite good on it.

Question: when I look out of the window in the cockpit, I see some small stutter, and then it fixes and becomes smooth movement. Same thing if I look the opposite way, a small stutter, for less than a second, then becomes smooth.

Is there a way to make it completely smooth? or you have seen this behavior as well?

Thanks all.

On the msfs2020 graphics panel try turning both motion reprojection and low latency = Off. Otherwise, this is maybe caused by a little too high graphics settings. Try lowering TLOD a little bit and try dlss/balanced. Sorry, all I can think off right now.
