Msfs 2020 will not shut down fully

I tested a couple of things, this might help. First, yes, if you use NVidia. I have a 4070 Super. Using the App to set the graphics as some suggested did stop the problem for a time. I found the issue cropped back up when I increased the rolling cache to a rather large number, like 100GB. Turning it off and deleting it allowed MSFS 2020 to shutdown normally. I then went back in and set it to just 16GB. Still shuts down normally. I’m guessing it’s a memory issue if that is too big, or not sized based on a based 2 number. For example, 16GB, then 32GB, 64GB etc. Honestly, I didn’t get a big boost making the rolling cache bigger anyway and have seen where it can cause other issues. In any case, Use the NVidia app and check you rolling cache under Data, or Manual Cache if you’re someone who uses that.

Very interesting and thanks to take the time to check it out.
For me unfortunately it didn’t work - I hav 16 GB rolling cache and MSFS2020 doues not shut down properly - indeed I own an old RTX 2060 an this can make the difference…

I have the 2060 and it’s a fine card, perfectly adequate if you don’t need 3,000 FPS. A bit hot-running though; it doesn’t start throttling down till it gets to about the high 80s.

Back on topic, I don’t even use a rolling cache so that’s not the cause.

I don’t use a rolling cache either. And I have an AMD card and not Nvidia. My FS2020 still will not shut down properly.

my msfs still shut down in task manager but not in steam program, must restart to reload msfs…

old game input service was causing issues
follow steps in video
for some reason the old one is not installed during a windows update…
this has helped me and i notice performance improvement to MSFS.
flight sim closes normally and fully, most of the time
also aerosoft toolbar pushback pro has done weird things to my system, I uninstalled it.

Thanks, but my Windows\System 32 (as well as Windows\SYSWOW64) have no gameinput folder nor any gameinput files.

Hi, just getting the Beta update 1.39.50 and in fact it solves the issue. Now we just have to be patient until the update comes.

The same with me

Reinstalled Nvidia App [4060] and the problem is solved!! Thanks!
(I am not using Rolling cache)

I don’t have this Game input services installed on Windows 11. Doesn’t help. MS needs to fix this issue!

So, crickets from Microsoft.. on this thread and every other? Shocker - couldn’t we at least get an unpaid Microsoft volunteer to tell us to run “sfc /scannow”? And yet… no one seems surprised in the least - even though the same company develops both the game and the operating system.

Hello @MightyDuke5155,

Members of the MSFS team have commented several times previously in this thread, we have tagged it with bug-logged (meaning it is entered into our internal bug tracking tool, validated to be an actual bug, and triaged for future resolution), and we have confirmed this bug is fixed in the upcoming Sim Update 16. If you’d like to enroll in the ongoing SU16 public beta test, you can find instructions to do so here:

Thanks,
MSFS Team

I have the issue of MSFS 2020 not shutting down fully since its appearance in april this Year. When closing it via the Taskmanager, I did notice how Game Services frooze also. So, today, I “stopped” Game Services first and “loo and behold”: MSFS 2020 was also closed and no more MSFS 202 icon on the taskbar.

@SeedyL3205 - I appreciate your response. I did not scroll through all 1200 posts since April (although the problem has been going on longer than that) to verify how many responses came from MSFS because I’ve never seen one before - not referring to this forum specifically.

The bottom line is this sort of major mishandling of basic operating system API’s is an issue that should never happen. Much less when both originate from the same organization, and certainly not for three months.

I know that this is a bona-fide reported bug, but I also have a feeling it won’t be getting fixed anytime, soon. Asobo has too many higher-priority tasks on their to-do list.

Meanwhile, I have found that a very simple tweak for Windows 11 works great! (It was suggested by someone else many, many posts ago, so it might not be known to recent posters.)

Here it is:
Windows 11: Turn on Settings → System → For developers → End Task → Use right-click on the MSFS 2020 taskbar icon for quick kill

You’ll be able to kill any other open apps/programs that appear on the taskbar, too, if desired.

(Note: this is for Windows 11, only.)

FYI,
There is already a fix for about 6 weeks or so but Microsoft refuse to address this as a hot fix but rather keeps us all waiting for SU16 when ever that comes out.
